FWIW I agree that by and large they do an excellent job, but that does not mean that there is no room for improvement.

I agree with Rube that umps should not be looking for a confrontation. A good ump pretends not to hear lots of stuff that he can credibly pretend not to hear.

That said, any player knows that if you show up an ump with a physically demonstrative reaction -- especially with respect to balls and strikes -- you're setting yourself up for an ejection.
