Honor

So I had a yard sale this past weekend, and we were selling junk off for basically nothing. It was, I suppose, a fairly decent way to get rid of lots of stuff and get a little bit of a reward for it.

But we had three separate incidents that really made me irritated about people and their scruples.

Two people stole things, stole them right from under our noses, and we knew they were stealing, but it wasn't worth fighting over. My gf was selling old articles of clothing for $1 each, and two different people took one extra item. They'd come over with 5 articles and say "4 pieces" and give us $4 and say thanks and leave. The stupid part was that if they had just said "Will you take $4 for 5?" we would have said yes, which is why it wasn't worth calling them on it, but it was just obnoxious, stupid, and an awfully low price to sell your honor for.

Then one guy bought something (actually a pretty nice dinner set) listed at $25 for $17, saying it was all the money he had. My GF accepted, put it in her pocket, and he took the plates. I even helped him (he was limping around on crutches) load it into his van. When my GF pulled out the money a few minutes later, he had given her just $13 - the supposed $5 bill was a $1.

People have no fucking principles. Obviously it's not the money I'm irritated about - just that people are so damned rotten.

I use to get upset when I felt people were trying to get over on me, but I starting thinking "What type of shambles is this person's life in when they need to guile trickery & skullduggery to cheat me out of a buck?"

this is why i would never have a yard sale
i'd rather:
A) List it on ebay or some forum
B) Donate it to someone in need

on the whole it was a pain in the butt but we made enough $$$ to buy a cheap carpet runner for our steps, which are, at present, treacherous.

I agree that some people sell their honor out for the paltriest of sums, but sometimes circumstances lead people to do things they might ordinarily never consider.

When I moved recently, I couldn't be bothered to sell a lot of my stuff due to time contraints and not really wanting to deal with shit like the above. Quite a lot of it was very good and almost new. I donated it instead to a homeless shelter run by the nuns at the hospital I did my rotations at. I felt good that it was going to those who need it.

What we didn't sell went to the goodwill, with the exception of some of the GF's nicer clothes which are being donated to Dress for Success. I have a pile of my own clothes I'd like to give to a similar men's org but I haven't gotten off my butt to track one down that's close enough to me that I don't have to mail it. Still, the $200 for stuff like old furniture, plateware, utensils, etc. you can pretty easily make is nothing to sneeze at, and not all that portable. The best part is just having people cart off your old desk chair, with no trouble to you.

Might I suggest you donate to Rural/Urban Benevolent Efforts. They do a lot of good work clothing men for professional success who might otherwise be singled out for their shoddy and un-stylish appearance.

Yeah, if I had the time/patience to sell my stuff I would have. I did a fair bit of charity before getting too busy in prof. school so I don't really feel like I needed to do this to soothe my conscience or some such. In fact, it's like they were doing me a favor by taking the stuff off my hands. Still, I'd rather it go to them than an unscupulous jackass like you had the displeasure of dealing with. I hate dishonesty very, very much.
