Boxed Wines?

I'm no wine connoisseur, but I've noticed that popping even a cheap $10-14 bottle of wine on a pretty regular basis can be quite the drain on the personal finances. Frankly, all the bottles stacking up can also be a pain, and it can't be all that green even if we are recycling.

My understanding is that boxed wines are getting better and better and can be worth it, but obviously there's a lot of total crap out there, too.

We recently tried a few boxed wines, and one or two were not awful. Black Box Merlot was not super, but it was a passable weekday dinner wine, and I can't imagine there aren't some decent NZ Sauv Blancs out there available by the bladder.

Does anyone have any suggestions on labels/brands to look for that aren't going to be disgusting and might offer a halfway decent table wine solution on a better budget?

Yeah, there are a bunch of nice box wines for $20-30 a box. They keep much better then an open bottle as well. Americans don't like the box wine (though it's starting to catch on) because they associate it with that nasty shit sorority girls drink. Black Box is actually one of the "better" ones, though I recommend the Cabernet. Pinot Evil Pinot Noir is a similar price and also good. You have to realize that at the price, and the fact, that each box has 4 bottles-- the wines we are seeing boxed are value wines. It would be nice if the trend continued though, and American consumers would embrace it so we can have some better options.

there was a Bordeaux out in box form, I totally forget who made it but Parker was pretty generous with the score (I think an 86 or 88 or something). I think it was called "Bordeaux Bag in the Box" or something like that.

there are others out there too

I was the biggest anti box wine snob out there. But something changed that. I'm from St. Louis. All of my family is from in and around this area in the midwest. Lots of hunters, fishers, grillers

Around 2000, I got into wine and agonizingly slowly I have brought most of my family around to enjoying wine over beer. My folks and three other couples (all relatives) rent a condo in Dauphin Island Alabama for a couple of weeks in April. Just about everyone on that trip drinks a lot while on vacation except for my mom who rarely if ever drinks. Dad brings most of the wine. Well, after a couple of years of spending more on wine than his portion of the condo, he decided to bring a couple of boxes of wine.

So what he did was start everyone off with a good bottle or two and then when everyone's taste buds are a bit numb move over to the boxed stuff.

And this last year at a Super Bowl party at my folks there were 4-5 good bottles of wine out and corked and a box of wine. The casual wine people went straight for the box. Never even started with the good stuff.

Last month my entire family went to Michigan. We go every year. Well they go every year. I alternate with my wife's family some years. 30 people go up. We rent five 3 bedroom cabins. Lots of booze going down that week. This year I took a few good bottles and 5 boxes of this stuff called Wine 4 Chillin. It's a white blend and the 4 is to let you know it's 4 bottles of wine. They also have Wine for Grillin which is a red blend. Both are blah. Neither is bad. Neither is good. My dad brought a couple of boxes as well as someone else brought two boxes of their new brand which is a sangria. This was the first year we had wine left over. We still went through a boatload of it.

The way I see it is this. When I drink beer, I have a couple of good beers (micro, import, etc) and then move to Bud Select. A) at 36 if I knock down 6 good (and heavy) beers, it's just that much longer I have to kick my own ass in the gym to keep the weight off. After a couple of beers my taste buds are numbed a bit so why not go back to the lower flavor, and more importantly, lower calorie options. Sort of the same deal with the wine.

For us, whenever we are feeding the masses that is my family, we always have a box or two on hand now....
