I probably should be able to recognize this but can someone tell me what sort of leather is used in the J Crew x Alden Indy boots? I need to know so I can buy the appropriate leather cleaner product.

Horween Chromexcel. I've tried a bunch of conditioners on mine, Venetian Leather Cream is the best. Alden and Russell Moccasin both recommend it. Horween recommends neatsfoot oil. Don't like the stuff.

Wow I had no idea it was Horween Chromexcel. What does that mean exactly though? Is it horsehide? I shuold have listened to you earlier and added Venetian Leather cream to my Russell order.

Info on Chromexcel: http://horween.wordpress.com/2010/03...excel%C2%AE-2/

Long story short, it's cow. Aniline dyed pull-up cow.

I picked up the Indy 403s from Alden Shop in San Francisco a couple of days ago. These are the same as the J. Crew 405s in the dark brown chromexcel, but with the original side stitching pattern (ie, not messed with like the J.Crew ones). They also have leather lining. As an aside, 405s from Alden now have leather lining too according to what I saw in the store. I'm really liking my 403s so far and I did a video review of them on YouTube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8lT2886TnM

Does the J Crew come in "C" width? Their web site just says "medium." Does that translate to a "D" width?

Also, should one size down a 1/2 size in length when ordering Indys? Or are they true to size?

Is there something about the description on the J Crew website which is unclear?

These shoes were shaped over a Trubalance last and run one half size larger than regular U.S. sizes.

Way to condescend! Is that the experience of folks here on this forum if they buy the regular Alden branded version?

i wear 8.5 in the barrie last gunboats and 8 in the jcrew indy. so sizing half size doesn't apply to everyone.

Just retrieved a pair from USPS yesterday and I am in love! The color and smell are intoxicating, they're definitely comfortable out of the box, and they fit just as the website states.

I have been lurking here on SF for a month or so and I would like to say thank you all for your info and discussion of Alden and the Indy, in particular.

I have the same issue with one of the tongues slipping to the side but I don't bother with it. I guess if it starts to annoy me enough I will get it tacked by my cobbler

By the way, does anyone have some insight with these? http://www.northriveroutfitter.com/p5285c186b145-alden_indy_boot_cordovan_limited_edition_style_40508h.html

Trubalance last? Says they have a leather sole, I'm guessing that means no commando, and no neocork?
