I see the snifters out all the time -- most places with a decent scotch selection serve in them. I don't really like it, either. Dunno why. I prefer some vintage heavy 'cracked' glass tumblers that I have nine times out of ten. If I'm doing a serious tasting I'll pull out my Reidel XO Cognac glass, which is the closest thing I can find to a very old Scotch 'nosing' glass from, well, I forget which distillery, that I've seen pictured. I don't really like Reidel's single malt glass very much. I also don't like crystal tumblers, the combination of the delicacy of crystal with the heavy sturdiness of a tumbler doesn't work for me. Whatever tumbler you choose, it should have a cut glass rim rather than a rolled rim. This does matter. My tumblers:
