Hahaha....1/2 of a tumbler is how I roll. A man's man's size, bitches.

Usually just a touch of water and never ice, but when I was in Shangahi yfyf introduced me to scotch and "good ice".

We went to a bar where they shaped a block of ice into a sphere that fit perfectly into a rock glass. The whisky was then poured over the ice. Fun way to drink.

I stated the proportions I used for reference purposes, not how much I put in a glass.

Usually drink it with just a single ice cube. I agree with Piobaire, I don't find that one bar cube really chills the scotch to the point where you can't taste the flavor. It just opens it up a bit. Then again, I drink rather slowly when I'm drinking scotch. I could see how throwing an ice cube or two in and then drinking immediately might affect the taste.

I will say this: Chivas and tonic got me through a tough family gathering after my brother's graduation. But for more serene moments: a single cube of ice will do.

When you guys say with one ice cube, do you not have any water with it? Does a bar charge you for a double to fill a tumbler glass? For some reason, I am never been good at ordering scotch. Possibly because I am young and waiters/bar tenders want to make sure it's right. "Scotch, splash of water, over ice" gets a weird look (possibly because I am in my earlier 20's and ordering JW Blue?? Or because I am adding water to a $10+ glass of scotch) is there a better way to order it?

+1. Was at my grandparents' house last month and gramps poured me some scotch. He came over with a paltry 1/4 glass. I told him I take at least 1/2 a glass.

When I get a new bottle, I do a tasting out of my nosing glass (see the scotch glass thread), and I progressively add water, tasting and nosing, to see where I find that scotch opens up just right, and I record it. Between different proofs ( I have a 128pf scotch) and different whiskies, I can't work with a standard rule.

Since I hit drinking age, I've ordered scotch as follows "Johnnie Walker Gold, neat, and a glass of ice water." Then I add what I want. A good barkeep will know that you what you're doing. I typically taste it neat, then add water to taste. BTW, a good bar will bloody well pour you a glass of ice water as they come to get your order. BTW, I wouldn't order Blue out. Combined with being young it probably does come of as poseur-ish, on account of the cache that Blue has -- perhaps the source of the funny looks. Not that it's a bad whisky, but it's not outstanding for the price. Plus, if you are ordering scotch at $35-50 a throw, you shouldn't trust the barkeep to know how much water you want. ~ H

Thanks for the tip, as I don't know many scotch drinkers. I prefer relaxing with a drink of scotch rather then chugging down multiple drinks, especially at some where nice or when I have to drive. I never payed attention to my dad when he ordered and wish I had now (avid scotch drinker).

Have you ever been to Night Town when you come to Cleveland btw? Wonderful place.

Eh, there are a few scotch drinkers in Cleveland! I had the fortune of spending a lot of time with my father in bars, and it became a real passion of mine. I also had the fortune of being taught that you don't have to go and get hammered; I've never seen my father drunk. Nowadays if I find a cool bar we'll find the time to try it together, which is pretty awesome. I just Googled Night Town, looks like a great place. I have to confess that my evenings are always accounted for when I'm in Cleveland, irrevocably. Perhaps if they are open Sunday night I will give them a try. Thanks for the tip. ~ H

Depends if I am drinking or tasting.

Singles - with a splash/drop of water
Blends (typically chivas or JW Black) - with club soda, lots of ice and a bit of lemon.

No joke my father used to drink scotch out of a water glass half way.

You need an ice ball mold.

As for JW Blue, I remember standing on line in Vegas with some friends to check-in to our room back in 2001. There was a group of girls in front of us talking about JW. One asks another, "You're a bartender; is Black really the best?" To which she replies, "Yeah, it's the best." One of my friends interrupts and says, "What about Blue Label?" The bartender friend says, "There's no such thing. You don't know what you're talking about." My friend puts down his bag, unzips it, and pulls out a box of the Blue. That was also when I realized that if I tell my friend to bring scotch, I should be more specific as to what kind to bring.
