Scotch........... and soda?

Soda water in scotch, ruin it, or just make a better drink? EDIT: The final option is suppose to read "I would never drink scotch. Period."

How can I vote for 'All of the above?'

Cheap scotch - soda in
Good scotch - soda back

I always do a few drops of water when I take my whiskey neat, but never tried whiskey + soda. Now gin and soda, that's a whole different story. Gin + Soda + Lime = my sippy cup when I'm out

Instead of water, I prefer an ice cube. IMO, really opens it up.

But I say drink Scotch how you like to, and don't let anyone tell you how to drink it.

In my experience, the ice cube gets in the way during drinking, the cold masks a lot of the flavor, and after about a minute the cube will have melted too much and diluted the Scotch.

You don't put in a Titanic sinker. The Scotch is room temp, one bar size ice cube is not going to chill a dram of Scotch nor dilute it any more than a splash of water.

But like I said above, drink how you like, and don't let anyone tell you how to drink it.

I like scotch and water (+ice), I am pretty limited in my knowledge though; usually stick with JW's or a Macallan 10. I suppose people with a better taste for the stuff + spending $ on nice product probably scoff at water and just let the ice cubes melt a bit/drink it neat.

+1 on the first part. But if I see you drinking a scotch and Coke, I'd have to bitch slap you with the back of my bony hand. My general preference is one ice cube. But depending on the scotch, I might just add a splash of water.

I've actually seen people drink Scotch and Coke. I think he was into cousin sex too, but he seemed to be enjoying his drink.

I put maybe a teaspoon of water in a jigger. I started drinking it with ice because that's how my father did it, but after just using water I never saw the point of ice -- it always marginally detracted from the Scotch and did nothing better than a drop of water.

Probably part of the problem right there. A jigger? Pour a man's size portion and the ratios are correct with one bar sized ice cube.
