great article. I grew up 15 minutes from robert moses beach on long island and have been bodysurfing since I was 14. I think the biggest swells I've been in are about 12 feet, nothing like the 20 feet swells out there. I've never seen anyone bodysurfing out here with fins but it seems like a good idea. I was out at Montaulk (east end of long island) 3 years ago and got caught in a riptide. I've never really had a problem getting in before but the lifeguard that swam out described the riptide at 1/4 mile long, so my efforts to swim parallel to the beach were for naught. That experience helped me realize that I'm not the swimmer I was when I use to lifeguard. Maybe fins would have helped. We were out at robert moses two weekends ago and there were great bsurf waves but the lifeguards were pulling in about 5 people per hour. My 11yo is the best swimmer of my 3 and he caught his first wave, an awesome sight to see. Unfortunately, 1/2 an hour later I had to pull him out of the rip and now I'm thinking I may have started him a little too early.
