Help me put together a high-end Scotch giftset

I need to get my lawyer a gift and was thinking that a few nice bottles of scotch would make a good gift. I know he likes the stuff but has never ventured outside of the Johnny Walker's. I'd like to get a nice regional diversity with the selections and not more than one bottle per distillery. What do you guys recommend?

Does he not take cash or just a check?

Ah. Forgot that one. I'd say >$150 a bottle. Maybe up to $250 if it's really worth it. I'd rather spread the cash over a few bottles than pony up a huge sum for 1 bottle.

Islay - Laphroaig
Highland - Glenmorangie 12yr
Speyside - Balvenie
Lowland - Auchentoshan (I think this is the one with the anise-like taste...I haven't had it in a while).

These should all be widely-available in most US states.

I was thinking something nicer from each region. Maybe some distillers/special editions?

Glenmorangie 18yr is great, as is Laphroaig 15yr. I gave lower ages because I wasn't sure of the price range. I think all of those scotches have different ages that should up the price a bit. 15-18yr are probably all around $60-100/bottle. I don't think I've had any Speysides or Lowlands past 12yr -- in my limited experience with them they weren't interesting enough to begin with to break away from Islay and Highland single malts.

Seems like a good selection but I would have a bottle of Highland Park in there somewhere, just because it is a great "all rounder" and I believe the 18 year old won "best whisky of all" or some such last year. Also Rosebank instead of the Auchentoshan if you are looking for slightly more "interesting" stuff, the distillery is now closed which adds a certain interest to the bottles, that and the fact the stuff is great.

Don't forget something from Cambletown - Springbank!

+1 on the Laphroaig 15. I can't stop drinking the stuff. Also, Glenmorangie.

I'd be more inclined with Lagavulin 16 (the 21 year Pedo Ximinez sherry), Oban, Bruichladdich (aged in french wine barrels like they used to do it over 100 years ago), Suntory Yamazaki (a great Japanese offering, a step up from their basic Suntory), and perhaps a very old Highland Park. I agree that Speysides don't interest me as much, but that is also because I'm fairly ignorant of the region besides the old standys like Mac and Glenfiddich

Seeing that you're all very knowledgeable about Scotch, I had a question. I'm very new to Scotch, and all I've really had is Johnnie Walker (Red and Black Labels), and Glenlivet 12 y.o. What would be a good Scotch to move up to?

^Try out Oban or Cragganmore. I've heard good things about the Suntory 18 but I have yet to see a bottle for sale down here. I can find the Springbank 15 and the Highland Park 18 but I can't seem to find the Highland Distiller's Edition.
