Open up a paper clip to put in there. It will support the ash and no one will see it.
My memory fails me, but there was either a book that I read or it was someone who told me directly, but there was a defense lawyer who would do this in the courtroom - back when you could smoke in court, of course. He'd light his cigar, which had a wire in it to keep the ash intact. While the prosecutor was giving closing arguments, the ash on the defense's cigar would be so long that the jury would be focusing on when it would fall, instead of focusing their attention to the argument. The defense attorney would also be sitting back with the cigar in his mouth and his eyes closed.
