They are a risk arbitrage desk. Typically the desk purchases stocks in companies that are going to be takeover targets, going long the acquirer and short the acquiring companies. Signals may represent hostile takeovers, mergers, leveraged buyouts, etc. My explanation is simplistic in nature and I suspect nowadays they heavily use derivatives for hedging risk/applying leverage and apply a more quantitative and blended low/high touch investment process. GS SSG is significant because Eric Mindich - Eton Park Daniel Och - Och-Ziff Robert Rubin - US Treasury Secretary Richard Perry - Perry Capital Thoma Steyar - Farallon Capital Eddie Lampert - ESL Investments etc., all started off at SSG at GS..

SSG does more than that. They also include typical distressed investing as well as hedges against O/S GS positions at lower levels.

I usually just lurk but I thought this thread was funny. Internship recruiting started recently at my university and I'm sure kids in my business program are willing to slit each other's throats for the job.

Prospective Goldman Intern Will Fight To The Death For GS Posted by Bess Levin, Jan 22, 2010, 3:10pm I don’t know how many of you are currently looking for new jobs and suffering through the painful process of figuring out what to say in your cover letter but if I may offer a suggestion— take a page from one ambitious li’l college kid’s playabook. He knew he wanted to work at Goldman Sachs and rather than temper his deep burning desire he shouted it LOUD AND PROUD. He wants to live and bleed Goldman Sachs and he doesn’t care who knows it! He’s not afraid to say, “Lloyd I will lay down in the road for you. I will kill a man in cold blood for you. I will do whatever it takes to get in at Goldman Sachs— no questions asked— UNTIL MY HEART STOPS BEATING.” Even as he writes this letter he’s getting calls and text messages from people asking what stocks he puts his money in today and where they should put it tomorrow— he’s got the street cred and the seed capital to start his own shop over summer break but he’s not gonna cause he wants to do it for you Lloyd! For both of you.

My cousin is getting his B.S. in Econ from Columbia and had a summer internship at ML at one of the international desks and did quite well, and while he was able to find employment with another firm (consultancy), he will be based out of Ohio and not NYC (which is where he wants to live).

Thus, whilst an internship at a big firm is great, don't expect it to open every door, merely use it as a very good stepping stone.
