Its also, not always about the money, I took a huge paycut when I took my current job becuase it meant I got to move back closer to home.

I agree. But when is too soon? And what is a good reason to switch jobs?

Money would be a main consideration on my part. I make decent money considering what I do, but I also feel I could (and should) be doing more.

Oh, you have good reason for believing the first and not the second.

Question for those that do the job cruise on a frequent basis...do you treat the interviews/meetings as informational interviews, in a more casual manner or do you approach them as if they are actual interviews and you are looking for a job in all seriousness? If offered a position with another company, or if they hint at offering you a job - how would you politely turn it down without burning your bridges at that company? Do you keep in contact with the interviewers for a while over email etc. so that you can always come back to them if you decide to leave your present employer?

People with 20-30 years at one company scare me.

Do you go to car yards and kick tires?

I haven't been applying, but I look all the time. It's interesting to know what's out there. I usually just do this with subscriptions--currently USAJobs and the OECD HR division. Though, now that I think of it, I do look at JOE (Job Openings for Economists) every month.

In two years I will start applying.

Regarding the earlier comment about being scared by guys who have been at the same job for decades: one of the reasons I took my current job is because several of the guys I'd be working with have been here 20+ or 30+ years. They have so much knowledge I can gain from and they all LOVE the job. Job satisfaction is a big part of deciding on a job.

I guess its subjective (and I tend to be a bit of a malcontent). I look at people who have been with the same compnay for 30 years and think about the road not taken? When your still just a middle manager, etc... all you know is that company. Its like having the same teacher all though MS, HS, College. you have to challenge yourself to grow.

What does that even mean?

I have always treated them as real opportunities. For example, I had been working at my first job out of school for about 2 years, and was realizing that the amount of money I could make by branching out would be staggering. plus some personal issues, I took an interview with a company that I was 50/50 about. When they called back to discuss hiring me, I called my dad and he asked me what my magic # was. when I told him the # that I would accept no questions asked, he laughed at how high it was. 2 weeks later I called to tell him I was going to need his help packing. So you never know what might present itself.

Money is a consideration, but you have to address it properly. Just saying I want more money isnt a wise choice. Its more of a question of saying well based on my research, it seems as if my company underpays for someone of my qualifications, and doesnt seem intested in discussing it. I think that sets the tone that your not just looking to get more money, and it sets up a discussion for what your looking for. I also dont think you can just say money as your only reason. It has be more general than that. Lack of opportunity, want to expand your experiances, etc....

Also, dont forget, HR people are not stupid, they can generally tell when someone isnt that interested. I had a phone interview the other day for a job I didnt really want, and I think it came though pretty blantantly when they started asking about relocating me. Even thought I kept saying I would, I think she could tell that it was a deal breaker for me, which is would have been.

You mean that every other option would be a step down? Seems sort of depressing, even though it sounds from your other posts like you enjoy your job and it obviously pays you well.

In this case the job hasn't stayed the same over the years. The industry has evolved and it's required new thinking, and has afforded the opportunity to try things that weren't possible before. So in that sense, while it's the same job, it has new challenges over time.
