Applying for Jobs while Employed

Thread Starter
How many of the happily, and not-so-happily, employed SFers continue to submit job applications?

I'm just curious. My old supervisor told me that she would send out at least one application a week, regardless of whether she is employed. It would allow her to evaluate her options and see if she is qualified for positions more lucrative or enjoyable. While, I tolerate my current position, I would like to be doing something more productive and exciting. The current plan is to wait out the bad economy, gain some experience, and jump to something better in a year or two.

That being said, do you continue to send out applications while employed? And if so, how many? Do you actually follow-up and go on interviews?

Very good thread to start. I have not done this for a few years, as I'm realistic about my current career status. However, the prior ten years to that, I was always on the look out. I would not send out a resume just to send out a resume, but if a position was a logical move for me, I would answer adds in the local paper, trade journals, etc. I also kept a ear open while in various network groups, and would get regular calls from head hunters.

Bottom line: it's always easier to get a new job, when you already have a job.

I did this just yesterday. Had a phone interview for the position minutes ago.

You are impressing me more and more. You should let more of the younger guys like Conne hang out with you.

I do it all the time. I probably dont go a month without applying for something. In todays economy and world, the only way to make more money is to move around. 10 years at one company is worthless when you get that same money by moving laterally. Also keeps you fresh. People with 20-30 years at one company scare me.

You need to be careful with that. Do you think it's not apparent someone will run for several k, if you make several lateral moves in the same number of years? And do you think it looks good to make more than one or two lateral moves in the first place?

Randall may be a nice guy and all, but do you really think he wants to put himself in a position to be dragged down in life by his association with someone like Conne?

that is correct. I have had people tell me its too soon after switching jobs before. You have to have a compelling reason, and more money is not one of them. I dont suggest this every month, but its good to keep abrest of whats out there. Its also, not always about the money, I took a huge paycut when I took my current job becuase it meant I got to move back closer to home.

Perhaps Teger, because in his fairy land world of entitlement, they can both go about life being given everything and anything at the expense of others who work harder and smarter for what they have achieved. It's their right you know.

I think you should always have an eye open, you never know when something better is around the bend and when it comes it's good to be ready for it. Plus the interview experience is priceless.
