i think portal had potential but was just a tech demo basically. max payne was CERTAINLY not better bg2 is possibly better, though, and maybe fallout id also say freespace 2 might be better

deus ex had its moments, great looking game in terms of atmosphere. wish the 2nd half was as solid as the first

games that i think can contend:

breath of fire 2 - got me into RPGs
ikaruga - game of all skill
power stone - best party game evar
shenmue (seriously though, this was one of my favorite games ever)

X-Com is awesome even today. I liked Deus Ex a lot but for me, the best game would probably be the first Fallout.

I vote for the original Syndicate (PC) and Wonder Boy III for the Sega Master System,

Mario Kart on SNES is also the diggz.
