FWIW, I've been hearing that most reviews are pretty bad. I just read this yesterday:

http://nymag.com/arts/books/reviews/58182/

I'm not sure why they would choose someone with an admitted "visceral hatred" of Pynchon to review his work... He also disparages Mason & Dixon which for me destroys any credibility the reviewer might have.

I usually ignore magazine and newspaper reviews, most are pretty intellectually bankrupt.

Yeah, weird news I just heard about too after a write up about it in Rolling Stone. I hope it is more like "Crying of Lot 49" which is my favorite Pynchon.

I was going to get it today, but I'm still stuck at work.

My first Pynchon was Vineland, and (maybe because it was my first) I think it's been unfairly criticized. I think it's the most accessible so far (not counting Vice), mostly because of the time and place in which it's set.

I couldn't bring myself to read that review -- not because I don't want to hear bad things about the book, but I wouldn't want to hear bad things about a book from someone who is predisposed to hate it.

The NY Times review was moderately favorable.

I've only had time to read about the first 50 pages, but it's entertaining as hell so far.
