I am making some selvage and non- selvage chambray shirts.
The selvage is coming from Cone white oak on draper shuttle looms. The problem is that there will be a lot of " character" in the fabric which makes it extra special for the puriest .
The heavy looms on the light chambray causes the " character" in the weaving process.
Do you think that will bother people. That's how the shirts were made back in the day and I thought it would be cool to do but modern technology has made it so most " character" is completely gone. A lot of people will think the fabric is flawed ( which it is but authentic to the loom period) and might not get the beauty in the actual fabric and looming process.
thoughts and discuss.
Best,
Mauro

By character, do you mean fuzzy and/or small imperfections in the weaves? It might turn off some people, but I think it's important to make the fact known up front.

For example, some EG retailers will add labels on some items stating that "imperfections in the fabric are intended and normal".

Personnaly, I love imperfections in the fabric and I think most people on SF do too.
I could definitely see how people could think it is flawed though. So adding that similar label to Eg wou8ld be a good idea.

What type and how much slubbyness are you talking about?

Character= natural loomed flaws such as slubs. It's a nice touch for authenticity.
In this particular fabric morethan normal du to the fact of the looms weaving finer yarns but not enough to say " WTF!?!"
Cone has standards it has to go by in order to sell the fabric.

Robin- are you excited for your fall EG buy???

That would definitely make me more likely to get it. I have an odd aversion to polo shirts, but saw some with a slubby fabric and thought, "Maybe I could wear that..."

I would love to see reference pics of what you think the end result of the fabric would look like..

Slubbiness is definitely required on a chambray, IMO. Otherwise, it comes too close in appearance to an oxford cloth, giving the garment an entirely different look/feel. Although, crazy amounts of slub can make a chambray look like a burlap sack.

what he said. Chambrays should look like chambrays. Make it a throwback to old times.

Any chance you could get your hands on some of that chambray fabric used on the Chimala women's shirt that was posted during the sale?

I think the target audience for a selvedge shirt would be okay with slubby fabric.
