Multiple piercing and tats? Why?

Thread Starter
I was at HersheyPark with my kids yesterday and there were these guys there with bullringsin their noses. A new low for me -

What has the human race come to?
Maybe I live a sheltered and innocent life, but why would someone pay to make themselves look like that?
A few tatoos is one thing, but 6 earrings, chin rings, bull rings, tongue ring, etc...what the hell is going on?
Do these people plan on actually getting a normal job? who's gonna hire someone who looks like that?
Am I just naive?

I think you're naive. Plenty of normal jobs out there for folks like that. Depending on the industry, they may or may not have an advantage when facing clients. But, there are plenty of tasks that never require client facing. . .

Why would someone pay to look like the guys in the MC forum? Why would someone pay to look like _______? People want to fit in to their particular segment.

You know, I usually don't have a problem with any kind of "self expression", but when some of these guys have that big hoop that destroys their earlobe, I just don't get it. Now their earlobe is streched out beyond belief.

+1 Also, sometimes it can help to look a bit edgy. Guys who build custom bikes, people in a band, tattoo artists, etc. All these people could be aided by this look. Or maybe they just like the way it looks and couldn't give a damn what anyone else thinks.

Yeah, fine. But what will all of this body mod look like when the person sporting it is 50? Or 60? I just don't get any of it.
Who cares what others do if it isn't harming you in anyway.
By 50 or 60, people's bodies tend to deteriorate and look gross anyways. Who cares if there are some empty holes and faded ink. Personally, I think there's nothing cooler than some 60+ guy with a faded tattoo on his forearm.

If you're into chicks with tattoos and piercings, it is probably a way to attract them.

I am used to tats, but I confess that some of the hardware really turns me off: Rings in the nose, the eyebrows, the lips, the chin. It's my aethetic-cultural-whatever preference, but I would actually like to know what's up with bullrings in the noses and giant earlobes. What is desirable about these things?

And, of course, I am over 40.

The next trend in douchebaggery

I don't like it but most my friends do. Best friend is covered in tattoos and piercings. I work with alot of artist so it comes with the territory.

One thing I notice lately is police officers covered in tattoos. If you want to be a police officer then cover those up. I don't want police officers that look more like criminals then the people they are arresting.

This will hold less and less true over the years.

An old guy now with a forearm tattoo was probably a sailor, Marine, biker, etc. - he got his tattoo doing something interesting. In forty years, that faded tattoo is going to be on some underfed douchebag who got it after a wicked No Age concert.

I suspect it is very advantageous for police officers that ever do undercover work.

Hi Dad! I just want to reiterate again, having tattoos is not indicative of criminal tendencies.

But don't worry, they already have the no visible tat rule in the military. I'm sure it will find its way into police precincts across the nation.
