A small safe is a good investment if you hide it well and bolt it down. Sure, no safe is uncrackable, but most small-timer crooks don't want to hang around long. They'll steal your plasma TV, digital camera, and Rolex on the nightstand; but you won't have to worry about most folks stealing your Edward Greens, or taking the time to find a well-hidden safe and then open it.

They just yank the safe and run away with it--- they worry about opening it later.

1 - hide it so they can't find it
2 - bolt it to concrete

This is, obviously, much easier in a house than an apartment. However, even in an apartment, you can get a big cardboard box that an artificial christmas tree came in, cut the box to go around the safe, and then fill the top of the box with christmas ornaments/wreaths/holiday junk. No one would take them time to go through that, or suspect a safe were in the bottom.

My Safe is bolted down, and in a strange place. However, I keep my valuables spread out, and the majority of them are in a safe deposit box which I go to regularly to swap stuff.

Several years ago, I was out having dinner with my parents, and I was living with them at the time too. When we returned home from dinner, we came out of the detached garage and started walking towards the house. The rear sliding glass doors had been smashed, and two men were walking out carrying their safe!

They promptly dropped the safe and proceeded to flee out the front doors of the house (we were approaching from the back).

After that, my parents stopped keeping the safe in their master bedroom walk-in closet, and have since many other theft deterrents in addition to the alarm which obviously takes too long for police to repond.

I think the over lining message is.... If they want it, they will take it!

I keep a safe in a white wall behind my Picasso. To find it, is impossible.

Gun safe, but that's about it. It's fairly heavy but can be removed.

I have 2 gun safes that are about 9 feet tall, 2 wine safes that are probably 5 feet tall, and one for watches and jewelery that is about 3x3x3, but it's bolted in and ridiculously heavy.

Here's what you do. Buy a small safe, don't anchor it to anything, leave nothing in it. Put all of your valuables either in a SDB or hide them somewhere. The thieves will take the safe thinking that there is something valuable in it and may never find your real valuables.

Of course they'll probably be pissed and come back to kill you in your sleep.

I plan on getting one because they are relatively cheap, and you cant beat the piece of mind. I like the idea of hiding it under some random ass boxes in the basement. I worry more about fire, etc.. than theft, so thats another reason.
