They bought a house that had it in there. Don't think that it's something that they would have designed in, but they thought it was pretty cool.

if I ever get really rich I would build a really well stocked bunker below my house with years of food supply. it would have stuff like guns, life rafts, stakes (for vampires), steaks (for eating), a speedboat, a helicopter, etc.

I remember seeing an article a while back that I haven't been able to put my hands on again about some middle class guy in the northwest somewhere who started building a bunker under his house in the middle of a suburban neighborhood. He spent years on it and just built it as he got the money. It wound up being several stories deep with some amazing technology inside: ventilation systems, storage systems, methods for sealing off sections in case his not-so-friendly, post-apocalyptic neighbors tried to storm the place and steal his provisions. It was pretty amazing. Wish I could find the article again.

Was it Manton's old house?

I read an article in Details about how an increasing number of middle class people were keeping several years supplies of food and weapons in their urban apartments, incase the apocalypse hit

Not unless part of his post-apocalyptic survival plan included moving to Texas. But then...

I bet your father sodomized your mother in that room. You're probably lucky you didn't find it. You would have been traumatized.

Yes. Mine is full of guns and bottles of liquor that I stockpile as I find it.

I think Sentry, a leading maker of the small safes, now has a watertight model for floods. Apparently a normal fire safe is not water tight, and flood damage (hurricanes) or even a really really really good soaking from a firehouse during a house fire can still ruin your valuables.

A small safe is a good investment if you hide it well and bolt it down. Sure, no safe is uncrackable, but most small-timer crooks don't want to hang around long. They'll steal your plasma TV, digital camera, and Rolex on the nightstand; but you won't have to worry about most folks stealing your Edward Greens, or taking the time to find a well-hidden safe and then open it.
