Do you have a safe?

I need to get a safe for my personal belongings. Not that I have a lot of valuables but they have more sentimental value than anything. My grandmother was broken into and they basically stole everything.

In any case, does anyone have a safe in their house? Do you have a small $200 or a heavy duty vault $3000+ one? I am planning on getting a small $200 one, but when I think about it, if I can pick it up and put it in my shopping cart, someone else could do the very same thing.

What do you think? What is the minimum size/price should I be looking at?

I think safes for the most part are pretty stupid, especially small ones. Thieves are looking to find safes, so that they can haul them away. Even ones that bolt in to the wall will get yanked off.

Truthfully, your best bet is a safety deposit box, or having a good hiding place.

No.

Out of laziness, most of my good stuff is hidden among huge piles of books and papers. I'll be screwed in a fire though.

+1

We had a small safe at the hotel we used to own. It was broken in to by an employee (he had 8 hours to get it open). He could have just as easily carried it off with a couple friends. Unless you have one that is really heavy-duty, they are worthless except perhaps to keep things away from kids. A small safety deposit box at the bank costs 30-40 bucks a year.

I have three safes two for guns and a third which is from the 20's for docs and valuables. They are a must have, let someone try to make off with them...

I understand what you guys are saying about people making off with them. But I just figure it would deter most petty thieves. I dont have many things of value, but again, mostly sentimental value. I currently hide things in my house, but I'm afraid that where I put what. Also (knock on wood) if anything happens to me, I would like my wife to know where to find everything. Instead of leaving a treasure hunt.

A safety deposit box meets all your needs with the added benefit of not having to worry about thievery. It seems like the most reasonable option...

Another concern of mine with the safety deposit boxes are that I have to go during regular banking hours. I rarely make it to the bank while they are open. Do all banks have the safety deposit boxes?

I have a refrigerator-sized safe to hold the various firearms I inherited from my father and grandfathers.

I would love to have one of those behind the painting jobbies like I see in all the TV shows and movies.

When we moved into our current home about 6 years ago, I purchased a mid-sized safe (still fairly small)...about 2' x 1.5' x 1.5'. It contains some documents, jewelry, a couple of handguns, etc. It is bolted down into the slab foundation of the house. I suppose someone might be able to get it out, but I doubt it. It's also got about 30 minutes of fire resistence in it. The price was between the points you gave (including installation).

i have a safe, it's not to deter theives or anything, but it is bolted into cement, so it would take some work to get it out for one.

I keep it, for keepsakes, and cash, more for if there is a fire. I live in a townhome, so I not only have to watch for myself, but my neighbors could f*ck me too.

Watches, cash, car titles, home paper work, passports, jewelery, all my important documents/pictures backed up there - it's the media type proof one as well. The most important thing to me are the pictures.

I picked my safe up brand new for 120 bucks, and installed it all myself. had to rent the appropriate tools to bolt it to the foundation
