I never got back after my weekend in Penang. had some fantstic food. essentially, it was two days based around wondering the city and eating. I had some good leads to begin, and used those to navigate. I hit 3-4 different hawker centers, including guerney center and new world center (the first is traditionally the best known, the second was recomended as the best) and had anywhere up to five dishes at each. I also hit two nonya resteraunts recomended as the best in town, and had some fantstic nonya style dim sum on saturday morning. I have to day that the dim sum was my favorite meal - a huge hanger like building, open on 3 sides with a roof and the kitchen on one side and huge ceiling fans. it was interesting - they had cart service but also two seperate counters that had specific groups of dishes that you could go and ask for. I had maybe 10 things, but 3 were outstanding and unusual - the sticky rice in a pot was about the best I have ever had, there were some chicken wings in a green coconut based curry and a small dish of meat (maybe beef) in a randang curry type sauce.
the two foods I didn't like very much were the laksa - I don't really like it, but wanted to try it made in penang on the street. it is simply too fishy for me. also the rojak is simply not a food I will ever like very much. between the two, that was about 90% of the street food offered in town, both are very popular.
