So I want to start running

How much stock should I put in buying shoes that help with over-pronation?
Go to a good running store and they'll point you in the right direction. I over-pronate and used to get ankle pain when I ran in my crappy sneakers. I got some Brooks and they're great. Just ask around other runners in the area and find out where they buy their shoes.

Very little...in my experience a lot of it is marketing. Shoes wear down quickly and the benefits they offer at the start quickly decline rapidly. Get a light shoe with a low heel first and foremost. A lot of super-cuddly shoes are monstrous and inhibit running more than they help it.

Every time I go to a running store nowadays I tend to have to tell the staff what I want and listen to their spiel about how I should be wearing X spike or should try the new Y model. I don't put much in unsolicited advice coming from someone who's never seen me run on a track or outside. The treadmill they use for the 'assessment' is a pretty bad indicator of form since it's too small for a full stride anyway.

The right shoe def helps. I have a speed shoe from saucony which i use for sprint workouts, but on longer runs my foot starts to ache(over pronator). Get a good quality shoe from asics or brooks and it will payoff.

I have over-pronation as well, and I also have flat feet. I do run, however, and I also play volleyball. I've found that my Asics volleyball shoes are actually better for running than specifically designed running shoes. I think the fact that the volleyball shoe is designed for lateral support helps with the pronation. You might give it a try. Only problem is I hate wearing down my volleyball soles on the street because they end up too smooth for the wood after a short time.

Go to a running store and get yourself looked at, then get the right shoes that fit your budget.
At least learn if you over/under/pronate or if you are just normal.

Me too, my feet are a joke.

I over pronate. At least that's what my left shoe heel slant tells me.

I have recently started running, however my approach was more systematic. I went for running room as I want to compete in a 10K Marathon, and do the Iron Man 2011 in B.C. Also I would highly recommend getting Orthotics made. They make a huge difference. I hope this helps.

Either a lot or a little, not much in between. Back when I ran for sports, I got in the habit of running with thin, nearly-flat soled shoes. Like next-to-no padding. For some reason, they worked a lot better for me than the expensive, well-padded shoes picked out for me by the guy at the big shoe store. If I started running again, I'd be willing try out running on a track barefoot.

As a beginner whose stride may change and who probably won't be piling up the mileage right away, you don't need $140 shoes, either. It's good to try on shoes without paying much attention to price, but it sucks to spend a ton on shoes that feel great in store, then realize a month in that they don't work for you.

Also, if you find a shoe that you're sure works for you, it can be nice to have multiple pairs. I've bought my last few pairs from runningwarehouse.com, which is reasonable to begin with and closes out last year's shoes quite cheap.

Ok, I'm back from Fleet Feet and $220 later I feel pretty good about my purchase. I ended up with a pretty good pair of Asics. The people there were pretty nice and did a good job of explaining to me why my feet suck (I'm flat footed with a droopy arch). So they added in inserts, and 3 packs of special $10 socks (under armouresqe....feet sweat is bad and causes blisters not sure if they didn't sell me the store on that one.

Now to start working out, I know to break them in a bit, but here's to getting skinny. BTW if I don't see results in 2 weeks I'm quitting.

@ the socks.

What Asics did they sell you. And what inserts. And how did you spend $150 on shoes? Are these US dollars? They didn't just sell you the store, they put you on staff.

Also, if you want to get skinny in two weeks, do Atkins and switch to drinking Scotch and sodas.

I'm kidding about the 2 weeks, I know it will take time and I'm not too worried about it, just taking it slow and I'll get there. So they sold me some sort of Kyomoto 14 (to lazy to go downstairs and look at the box) and an insert of Superfeet.

No matter what I do, I usually get hosed the first time around.
