Had a discussion last night about this. Excepting the obvious industries such as defense, aerospace, and government contracting. . . in this economy is the private sector basically shunning those that have government backgrounds?

Is government experience shunned by the private sector?

I haven't got the experience to make any kind of qualified statements, but I worked in the New Orleans chamber of commerce, which has been undergoing a pretty heavy restructuring over the last year or two, and I can certainly say that the opposite is certainly not true. Government - especially the economic development arm - loves private-sector experience.

Not in the least. If you have regulatory experience, it is easy to move into the private sector that you had previously been regulating. Also, if you have been working in offices that hand out juicy government contracts, the companies trying to get those contracts, will often bring you on hoping your contacts will toss you jobs.
