It was actually quiet last night though. What I didn't count on is that while they give two shits for anyone else, when they decide to sleep and their sleep is interrupted they will do something about it. The dog doesn't bark when everyone is up disrupting the entire neighborhood.

I think the problem that a lot of people have is that they assign their own level of common sense to other people. Unless people are confronted they won't feel any pressure to stop bad behavior. It doesn take being a tough guy or a jerk, just say "Hey, were you guys lighting off fire crackers at 3:00am?, well you know you have neighbors." Will they think you're an a-hole, probably, but they'll be on notice that people are monitoring their behavior.
