A lot of Moscow is like that. I lived there for a while, and found it a bit depressing.

There's a film -- I forget the name -- about how a young guy tries to leave some part of Russia and make a new life for himself somewhere else. The film has this scene of him walking to the bus stop, and he passes all these tall, imposing concrete buildings. One his way, he crosses streets named Lenin and Stalin or whatever. Then he gets on the bus, the bus takes him to this new town, and he gets off. He's again surrounded by tall, imposing concrete buildings, and he once again crosses streets named Lenin and Stalin or whatever, as he walks to his new home.

As an aside, MMM GATs are apparently being counterfeited in China. For some reason, I'm surprised. Doesn't seem like something that would have a big market (at least for counterfeits)

It's a replica of a replica.

Not a bad knockoff at that

Not surprising. There's knockoff Rick dunks coming out of China too.

Maybe leather quality better on these than the MMM version?

I went to Pitchfork a couple years ago and I hung out at Big Star each day before going to the festival. Cheap tacos, whiskey and beer.
Depending where you are staying, I ate at the Purple Pig which is right on Michigan Ave. It was a good spot. I also went to one of the Rick Bayless restaurants.

If you like jazz, the Green Mill is good.

http://greenmilljazz.com/

It's the oldest nightclub in Chicago, and used to be owned by Machine Gun Jack McGurn (one of Al Capone's henchmen and the leader of the Saint Valentine's Day Massacre). It used to be a really swinging and swanky place back in the heyday of jazz, but now feels kind of like a creaky, old speakeasy. Still, the acts are good and the drinks are cheap. The crowd is also a lot more down-to-earth than many of the jazz venues in NYC and San Francisco.

Lots of videos on Youtube of previous acts there, if you care to look it up.

Yeah, you're def not alone in feeling that way. I'm sure you've heard the theory that brutalist buildings on college campuses were designed to fill students with enough fear/depression that they'd never think about starting riots. And I've never been to Moscow, but maybe it would be dreary enough to turn me off brutalism for good.

But I dunno. I find huge swaths of concrete soothing. It was honestly surprising to find folks reacting with such revulsion to some of my favorite buildings in DC.
