I wouldn't want to move into an apartment that reeks of cigarettes. Would also stay away from one that smells like curry but as far as I know, curry smell doesn't give you cancer.

Having non smoking apartments makes more sense than non pet apartments, as the smell actually can seep into adjacent apartments, which is a problem in older buildings.

Curry smell can be very pungent, there's a couple arab/asian families in my building and just smell the curry a couple floors up hours after they cooked it, but nothing beats the food the council delivers to pensioners, I don't know who makes it or how they get away with making that rubbish, but it smells like stale cat food.

That is yet to be proven.

What about smoking odors?
There’s no research in the medical literature as yet that shows cigarette odors cause cancer in people. Research does show that particles from secondhand tobacco smoke can settle into dust and onto surfaces and remain there long after the smoke is gone – some studies suggest the particles can last for months. Researchers call this thirdhand smoke or residual tobacco smoke.

The evidence is building about the dangers of thirdhand smoke. NNK and PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) are carcinogens that are known to cause lung cancer, which have been found in dust samples taken from the homes of smokers. Research has also shown that thirdhand smoke can damage the DNA of human cells in cell cultures. And studies have shown that the particles that settle out from tobacco smoke can form more cancer-causing compounds.

Though yet unknown, the cancer-causing effects of thirdhand smoke would likely be small compared with direct exposure to SHS. Still, the compounds may be stirred up and inhaled with other house dust, and may also be absorbed through the skin or accidentally taken in through the mouth. This is why any risk the compounds pose may be larger for babies and children who play on the floor and often put things in their mouths.

No actual cancer risk has been measured at this time, but the health risks of thirdhand smoke are an active area of research.

This is probably old, but the concept seems pretty cool. Not something I'd wear and I'm sure it gives off next level "Oakley douche" vibes

Fuuma, the key is that I don't have enough money to live alone. So non-smoking is actually about the other people living there rather an myself or the walls. Thus, a non-smoking apartment- one where no one smokes.

Didn't you post a bunch of fits where you were smoking cigarettes? Maybe it's different in DC but I have a bunch of friends that do / have smoked and I've never seen any of them do it inside at home.

Are you looking for a complex where no one smokes or just... a room mate that doesn't smoke?
As someone that owns/manages apartment buildings, you for sure want a non-smoking apartment. The only way to get rid of the smell of smoke in an apartment is to prime the whole thing with Kilz or a similar product and most owners are too cheap for that. And if you've ever seen yellow nicotine bleeding through paint on a ceiling, you'll realize you really don't want to live in a place with smokers.

Last time I saw anyone smoke inside a house was in college and that was probably the least filthy thing that was happening at the time
