Most HR people are idiots, and most don't even come close to what cyd is talking about. Most HR people scan hundreds of resumes per day looking for entry level candidates and perform phone screenings to make sure the person on paper isn't a total idiot.

While what Cyd said, is true, he is talking about a very small niche of the market. My experience is in banking, but in my industry the postion has to be SVP or higher before this type of consideration would be paid. You have to remember that in most cases you're trying to find a needle in a haystack, and then trying to convince that needle to pick up and move across the country (in many cases). Given that the acquiring firm is also going to have to shell out for an expensive relocation package and make up for any lost long long term compensation to the acquired employee, one year of salary isn't a huge number if you're getting the right guy.

Also, being paid the one year of salary is the just the revenue part. Many of these places are set up like law firms or other private practices and as such have a similar cost structure. So it's not like if you complete one of these searches and you get paid $250k that all that money goes straight into your pocket. After all, somebody had to feed the fish in the coy pond in the lobby.

It's also important to note, that exec recruiting firms rely heavily on their reputations. If you place a few shady characters into high positions at noted companies, those companies will never work with you again. As such, people recruiting for these positions work very hard, are very good at what they do, and worked in the industry for several years. So it's not as if people are graduating college, opening their own exec search firms, and retiring when they're 30.

If you recommend someone and they get hired my company will pay you 10% of their salary after 90 days (or 6 months, maybe).  There is just a shortage of certain types of skills and companies are willing to pay a lot for that.

It's not just recommending somebody. It's finding them, evaluating them, and then convincing them to interview for the position (by far the hardest part).

As to your point, yes, it's pretty difficult to find effective leadership in pretty much all walks of life.

Forget leadership. It's hard to find competent, diligent, people, at any level. I have had first hand experience with lawyers, accountants, and programmers whose mottos were "don't give a fuck", "gone fishing", and "your email will always be lost", respectively. None of them were fresh out of school, either. So... if you want to make decent money, go into one of those fields, and regularly deliver work on time and error free, and you'll probably do okay.

Also, if you are a student, you are not going to fool your professors. It's really easy to pick up if you are just dialing it in.

HR people are generally not that high paid (at least not here), I have heard some really astonishing things about them, especially in house HR seems like they just play roulette with applicants.

Before I became self-employed I applied for a couple jobs and some of the replies I got were. :face palm:

We have chosen someone who live closer (I lived within a km of the company), called them and asked if they wanted an atlas, as it was a terrible reason.
We have chosen someone who has experience with this type of job (I had the exact same job just in another company), called them and they had NO answer.

I think people are confusing HR, internal human resources department (paid salary), and external recruiting/referring/headhunter agencies that provide Companies with talent (paid by commission).  Nobody in HR gets paid a percentage of someone's salary for hiring them.

With respect to competence, I am not. I have a few friends at the SVP level and higher who have horror stories about headhunters they hired. One guy told me that his person forgot who he was, and actually presented him with someone else's options. And another who was offered a job as a golden opportunity, that was at a smaller firm, at a lower level, that paid 1/3 less than his present salary.

One, you can fail upwards, perhaps it's not as easy as failing downward, something I've observed many times as well, bit it's certainly doable. In some fields, there are some pretty big crumbs.

And if you guys doubt that money is being thrown around, let's just look at the fiasco that was GILT group's Park&Bond. Those guys blew through $25M in a single year and then closed shop And fashion, in the hierarchy of industries, is very small change.
