I pay someone to follow me around and hand out tips to everyone I encounter. I don't tip him though.

Uh uh, I don’t tip. No, I don’t believe in it. … Don’t give me that, if she don’t make enough money she can quit. … I don’t tip because society says I have to. All right, I mean I’ll tip if someone really deserves a tipping, if they really put forth the effort, I’ll give them something extra, but I mean this tipping automatically, it’s for the birds. I mean as far as I’m concerned they’re just doing their job. … She was okay. She wasn’t anything special. … Look I ordered coffee all right? Now we’ve been here a long fuckin’ time, she’s only filled my cup three times. When I order coffee I want it filled six times. … The words “too fuckin’ busy” shouldn’t be in a waitress’ vocabulary. … Jesus Christ, these ladies aren’t starving to death. They make minimum wage. I used to work minimum wage and when I did I wasn’t lucky enough to have a job that society deemed tip worthy. … You know what this is? It’s the world’s smallest violin playing just for the waitresses. … So is working at McDonald’s but you don’t feel the need to tip them do you? Well why not? They’re serving you food. But no, society says don’t tip these guys over here, but tip these guys over here. That’s bullshit. … Fuck all that. … I mean I’m very sorry the government taxes their tips. That’s fucked up. That ain’t my fault. I mean it would appear that waitresses are one of the many groups the government fucks in the ass on a regular basis. I mean show a piece of paper that says the government shouldn’t do that, I’ll sign it, put it to a vote, I’ll vote for it, but what I won’t do is play ball. And this non-college bullshit I got two words for that: learn to fucking type, ’cause if you’re expecting me to help out with the rent you’re in for a big fucking surprise.

keep it simple: divide the the subtotal by five and round up the tip to the nearest dollar for 'good enough' or better service. if the service is notably shitty, they get whatever. having been one in a past life, waiter-folks' lives don't hinge on a dollar or two either way--though they do talk shit about and remember you if you're cheap

Also:

  • the episode where he tips the waiter 30% but doesn't tip the restaurant's captain
  • the episode where he sees the restaurant host at the newsstand and the host takes Larry's 20 bucks because he thinks it's a tip

Just my opinion and practice.

14% for terrible service

20% for good service

30-40 for my regular spot where they treat me like a king and comp shit all the time, plus cuban cigars for my sommelier homie

i bypass the tip for takeout by just signing my name teacha.gif

Tipping is an ass-backwards way of running things. Food + booze + 12% tax + 20% "standard" tip? It is illogical and inefficient. Increase the prices 15% and kill the tip, IMO. Pretty sure there have been "studies" that show that the quality of service does not go down when tip is eliminated. In BC, min wage is $10.25, but for servers it is $9.00 lol.

While we're on the subject, I hate how prices are shown pre-tax. So the store is showing me the money that THEY receive, AFTER they send the gov't the tax? Why the hell do I care? I care how much money has to come out of my pocket. Not how it gets divvied up after you get it. Of course, I am part of the problem, as I price my services like everyone else...

this is only for liquor servers aka bartenders, although i'm sure for most licensed restaurants they manage to put this on the regular wait staff as well.

Tips are part of the price here, so you only tip if you are really happy with the service.

Taiwan is the same way... no tax, no tip.

(don't live there now, but I did for quite a time)

You are probably right. My GF works part time as a server and she thinks she gets $9. At her restaurant they actually pool all the tips and divide it up equally. No one server makes any more tips than another working the same shift. Way better system than the traditional one. Service is way better too.

the only thing i learned here was that people live near me in vancouver

I tip 20% baseline, but then again I'm a waiter and I empathize with my kind. Never tip less for lunch. Understand that the server might get only a fraction of your tips, and that some might go to the people who sat you/cooked your food/made your drinks/cleared your mess.

Also I remember frequent low tippers and meticulously plan revenge
