i am not a lawyer. but i have lots of jewish friends that are. all different areas of law, and salaries all over the map. its not an easy job, but i dont think its quite the nightmare a lot of people make it out to be, or at least its not always that way. lots of jobs can suck, and being self employed is not easy either, nor for everyone. if you want to be a lawyer, i see no reason not to take a crack at it.

what's your point? cost of living obviously varies from major metro areas to the rest of the country

he referenced a million in a non-projects area (yes, hyperbole)...plenty of stuff in the east bay that fits those criteria

Tens or hundreds of thousands in debt is a good reason not to take a crack at it. Your friends in the profession likely made it in before the recent glut of law grads. To put it in perspective, I'm an English Literature undergraduate, and our advisors tell us that vying for a tenure track Humanities PhD position is less of a risk than law school; if you can't get into a T14 with huge subsidy/scholarships or into the HYS triumvirate and secure a BigLaw position it's tantamount to financial suicide.

OTOH, there's more to life than money, and I've made my share of poor financial decisions in pursuit of my passions. If you've a burning desire to be a lawyer and the maturity to make the most of your time in law school it's better than spending the rest of your life in a career you hate.

You mean if I go to law school it's not guaranteed I'll end up like Harvey Specter?

I meant the peninsula. Most of the East Bay = a giant project (5). It's also too far to commute. Maybe good for rental property though.

My friend just "got a great deal" on a tiny duplex without a garage in Russian Hill. Paid above ask all cash as is... somewhere around $1.4. Wasn't the highest bid. At least they can subdivide after a year and rent half out or something.

I don't know if this is charcoal-y enough for what you're looking for, but it looks nice to me, if you can fit a 36.

Another SFer lawyer should be able to hook you up with a job at his firm when you graduate.

Interesting way to keep the nouveau riche Chinese population down, it will be interesting to see if the birth rates fall due to the women being insufferable gold diggers.
