"Taught" as in learned from others either directly or indirectly. People don't have some genetic predisposition for good taste.

Well, yes taught. What do you mean you can't "teach something subjective?" Cultural attitudes are learned, and they carry values. Buying into those values—or even just growing used to living around them—has a profound influence on the development of taste.

well, learned through exposure or experience, yes. you can't teach someone something indirectly.

what wasn't clear about that?

taste is subjective, it's opinion. you can't teach someone to have good taste anymore than you can teach them to have good opinions, since it's self-defined. it's figuring out, learning, what you like and what works for you. nobody's teaching you what works for you.

splitting hairs to some extent with this whole tangent, but while related, teaching and learning aren't the same thing. one is self-directed (learning) while the other isn't (teaching). which is which is ultimately determined by the action present.

There are certainly objective criteria that can be applied to aesthetics...

I'm saying culture is a teacher, I'm not saying you can "teach someone good taste." I think we both agree that there is no such thing as "good taste."

Yes we can teach people to have good opinions. It's done daily all over the world. We teach people to critically engage with their own views and consider the limitations and repercussions of their thoughts, we show them how to find exceptions, mistakes, flaws, and strengths in their views, and we expose them to alternative viewpoints that may shift, change, alter, augment, add to, validate or ruin their opinion.

If you're going to continue your comparison to taste, well how well thought-out and robust someone's taste is surely matters, otherwise someone is simply just a trend-automoton.

Taste and opinions are intersubjective, not purely subjective: they are relational and the ongoing result of multiple interactions and conversations: this thread is one example of the evolution of taste. And yes, you can teach people to have better taste and better opinions (or at least to develop better foundations for both).
