I'd guess you can find more interesting buttons vintage on eBay (or on the cheap at a local craft store) than anything new from a clothing store. An actual tailor's (as opposed to any store with a brand) would probably have both a decent selection and someone knowledgeable enough to discuss the options, should you want another opinion.
Back in university a girl dragged me into one of those Sapphic knick-knack shops and it had an entire wall of beads, beads, beads of all shapes and sizes and colours, for any project conceivable in this world or the next -- somewhere, somebody has probably created an equivalent for buttons.
^ the caramel laces on caramel leather are turrible.
I had a pair of Rockport shoes that color when I was in school and looking back they are one of the more cringe-worthy items I put a lot of wear into. They were certainly a lot uglier than GATs, regardless of the colour. But I was traipsing about with a backpack full of textbooks so I expect nobody thought twice, and Ottawa (anywhere in Canada outside of Toronto/Vancouver/Montreal, really) is style purgatory to begin with.
if I didn't already own mmm gats I'd buy those granted they're not more than like 150
There's more info in the Epaulet affiliate thread - no official price yet, but they should come in under $300. Which is frankly strange, because that puts them near MMM GAT territory, and they just look kinda weird.
