I scratch the shit out of my cheap watches. I think I'd have a heart attack doing that to something $$$$. This is also the reason I don't wear $1k yohji fisherman pants.

People that know will know though. Status symbol don't necessarily have to be obnoxious or gaudy.

on my list of 'purchases sometime in the next year' is a nice watch. i'm leaning towards a stowa or a flieger right now. part of what draws me to them is the particular history behind them, the idea of the automatic movement, and the longevity. most clothes i own (barring some shoes) are going to be gone in 10, 15 years max, but a watch could last decades if you get it serviced.

i can't really relate to the 10 or 20,000 pateks though. i'd be afraid of breaking them (and paying 7,000 and waiting 10 months to get it repaired) or having it stolen.

Yup. I think Nomos Tangente is probably still one of my favorites, probably as simple as you can get, also like Stowa Chronograph.

Movements are part of the mechanical beauty of a watch, even if it's not visible (but the beautiful ones usually are).

Ah I didn't see that one.

To your second point, there's a whole world of watches between 150 and 1000 that are "worth buying." Tissot, Hamilton, Stowa, Sinn, MKII, OWC, O&W, Steinhart, C. Ward, Magrette...I could go on and on.

ETA movements don't do much for me. Same with homage watches. Aren't most Sinn over $1k? I forgot about Stowa though.
stowa is under $1k unless you get a lot of complications. sinn is over $1k.
There's like... 1 Sinn under $1,000.

I would recommend saving for something in the $3-4k range... you will be happier.

Stowa has some in the $800-$900 range. Archimede is also a nice brand for less than $1k.
