erm, a nice pair of winter boots? do they really exist? If you live in the city, just buy something with a dainite or crepe sole. dainite soles has a decent grip on snow and looks nice.

Clearly you don't live in a city with actual winter.

My Dainite-soled Tricker's are horrible in the snow. Vibram lug soles are much better.

over there we're not going to be wearing ugliest snow boots 6 months in a year, it's not fun and snow boots are depressing. dainite/victory/crepe will do fine in bad weather (snow, ice etc.) unless you work outside

It depends on what you you will be wearing the boot for and the weather conditions. It's true that Dainite is terrible on ice and snow; Zissou is right in saying a lug sole works best. If you want a boot for the winter with a sole that looks like you are wearing leather soles and you are walking on cleared sidewalks and roadways then Dainite may be okay. If you are not worried about seeing the lugs then a Vibram or similar lug sole is far better. Look for a Commando sole or alternatively, Dainite makes the Ridgeway and Medway soles which have lugs but they are less aggressive than a Commando sole. I have both Medway and Ridgeway soles and they work reasonably well for a Canadian prairie winter with lots of snow, ice and crappy snow clearing. I find the rubber formulation of Dainite no matter what the sole is not ideal for sub-zero temperatures; they are quite hard. Vibram soles (lugged or not) seem to be a softer formulation which increases traction on snow and ice. It may be that a non-lugged Vibram sole would out-perform Dainite.

true, wouldn't say dainite is terrible on snow though. while it's certainly not the best option, it's option and this is styleforum after all.

I lived through a Norwegian winter, so I have a pretty good idea of what a Scandinavian winter is like...

then you know, when the winter last more than few days in a year, there's days when you don't care what's most weather approved option. a lot of people keep wearing low-top sneakers such as converse even the weather gets really bad.

M = 48

I've lived in a very snowy area my entire life and I don't think I've ever worn weather appropriate 'boots' for anything except shoveling.  I usually wear sneakers.

Does anyone else keep track of the stuff they're into/considering buying? Pinterest may be the most insidiously tempting wishlist tracker ever. http://pinterest.com/harajujubrad/wishlist/
