I just finished dinner and remembered a great threak on the "off position" to signal that you're done eating. What a shining moment in SF history

Only nobody really does it anymore. Pretty much if your utensils are on the plate and you look like you're done eating they're going to take the plate away. Even at 3 star michelin restaurants. Maybe they care at Louis xiii

Also espresso really are not piping hot once you get them. Pleasantly warm hot more like. I could see ppl not liking brewed coffee in the summer tho. Most good places will have cold brew coffee (coffee steeped over nigh at much lower temperatures than normal) in the summer that theyll put ice in.

Don't people's parents teach them this? Cutlery at rest always gets set to the center of plate with napkin off to the left, right?

Wrong. I direct you to the threak in question, something about 4:20, fork up, applicable only to right handed people because left handed people worship Satan, etc.

I didn't articulate myself particularly well, meant like this:

 /     ==    \

|          \\   |

 \          \\ /

Which seems to agree with the thread. Resting would be

 /              \

|    //     \\   |

 \  //       \\ /

   f         k

I don't think I've given cutlery this much thought since I was first introduced to the concept of not using your hands

I don't know, I think in Europe at least it's pretty much the norm to place your cutlery on 4 o clock when finished.

Also, do Americans really do this:
Quote:
In the American style, also called the zig-zag method, the knife is initially held in the right hand and the fork in the left. Holding food to the plate with the fork tines-down, a single bite-sized piece is cut with the knife. The knife is then set down on the plate, the fork transferred from the left hand to the right hand, and the food is brought to the mouth for consumption. The fork is then transferred back to the left hand and the knife is picked up with the right.

Sounds retarded but that's just my own cultural point of view so it shouldn't be taken as an insult.
