toasty sometimes you don't make any sense

thewho13: you have a really irritating, pretentious writing style. are you like a sophomore philosophy major?
gettoasty: shut up.

I admire gettoasty's proactive approach in getting a head start on the inevitable finance career-fueled descent into madness.

My point is just that meeting people in real life—people who only knew you on SF, be they regular posters or lurkers—has the odd pretense of "oh shucks we already kinda know each other," because interaction on SF—be it passive-receptive or active—is its own sort of first impression. And it's an unusual sort of first impression. Nothing wrong with there, but for those who aren't accustomed it, it can be unsettling.

English is not my first language so bare with me:\

Essentially you're saying that all these internet personalities is a mirrored projection of our real selves and that when we stumble upon someone on FB whom we recognize from the internet or bump into on the street, we immediately dial into our memory bank and recall whatever comes to mind of that individual as perceived through writing [on an internet forum] (?)

I just think that is really weird and awkward to have that mindset. Perhaps I am naive and ignorant but I imagine meeting anyone for the "first time" in life to be the 'first time' not the 2nd time after reading about them via online. So my curiosity about them will be the same, and it would be interesting to get to know them from the gecko

Of course in this context of Styleforum it is a bit different but "awkward" and "weird" (however you define that on your own) is the last thing I would say. It is a community that everyone holds a similar interest in...it would be exciting and more interactive to see how people's further ideas and perceptions come about

Awkward and weird would be like meeting Miran who has no interest in clothing, but merely talks about food all the time. Now that is a real internet character--meeting trolls in real life : (

I've met four SFers in real life (at least!) but only one of them knows it

Yeah, you've got it I think. I don't think that how I feel about it applies to everyone—it certainly seems to contradict how you feel—but I do know that, even though such meetings do inspire the same curiosity and genuine want-to-get-to-know, it would be very unusual (and then perhaps, to some extent, "weird" or "awkward").

But yeah, I'm sure we can both agree that meeting Miran would truly be awkward and weird. Cause... shit.

Also, my apologies given that English isn't your first language—it's a pretty good one to know. tounge.gif

Was this intentional? I love it. Not making fun of you either, i just enjoy these types of things when people hear phrases and assume they're something else.

Also works the other way around too.

But seriously: no.

On second thought, Teger, you're being, like, the acecow of style policing.
