I'm curious... why is there so much designer name-dropping on here?

It almost feels like if I posted anything that wasn't designer and expensive that I would be shunned and outcast.

I do understand the difference between designer clothing and typical mall store clothing in terms of quality, fit, etc., but just because something isn't expensive doesn't make it worthless, does it? frown.gif

I know somebody commented earlier about the difference between SW&D and MC, how MC is a lot about thrifting and getting discount but SW&D is more about current designer clothing, but truth be told I have champagne taste on a beer budget. Most of my purchases these days are from thrift stores. I don't really care about what's on the label, as long as it fits and I like it.

I'm a broke student right now but even when I'm working a full-time job I don't know if I'll be making enough money to be able to save up for $300 shoes or a $600 jacket.

When I do have money to spend on clothing it's usually not a lot, so I'm limited in terms of stores I can shop at.

I think the most "designer" item I have is the black&white patterned jeans from Versace for H&M, which were a Christmas gift from my boyfriend. I have a nice wool sweater from Comme des Garçons for H&M but it's too small now, and a Viktor & Rolf for H&M sweatshirt but it's way big on me. The closest I have to designer shoes are a pair of Steve Maddens that made it to Winners, where they were reduced from $100-something to $90-s/t, then $60-s/t, and eventually $36 at which point I was so excited that I could finally afford them and that they weren't sold out that I couldn't have purchased them faster. Oh, and a pair of Gucci shoes I got at a thrift store for $40.

Everything else that looks anything like something on the runway is probably an affordable version from H&M. I like their stuff for the style and fit and I used to work there so I have quite a large collection of H&M pieces.

TL;DR: I am a broke student and this forum makes me feel bad cuz I can't afford jack shit LOL

you can dress well and not spend a lot eg street etiquette dudes

thrift mentality exists here too as does name dropping in MC

h&m is imo great.

That makes me feel a lot better haha, thanks.

I was like "omg i don't have anything to post because my stuff is all non-designer and I'm a cheapass uhoh.gif"

I need to start taking pics of my fits again. I only have a few from last year that I posted on lookbook before I realized that it's just a popularity contest and people vote for who they want to fuck rather than cool outfits.

There are 2 responses:
1) Get a part time job and save your money if clothing is of real interest to you. It's not nearly as hard as you think.
2) Don't worry. SF is an enthusiast's forum and thus they like more upper-tier/designer/out there stuff. However, if you buy well-fitting clothes and some nice shoes and know how to style them you'll do better than 95% of your peers. Will you get a million thumbs up? No. But SF thumbs up doesn't translate into real world success.
