Then you look silly whenever you discuss Air-mess.

The fact is you can't easily convey the proper pronunciation via text. But "air-mess" is not the closest approximation.

They have the standardized international phonetic alphabet or whatever for that, but I don't know it.

I think "air-MEZZ" is the best thing to give to a random American walking down the street without needing any further explanation or even mention that it's french. It's obviously not perfect and doesn't convey a French accent in any way shape or form, but that's the price you pay for oversimplifying for a foreign language.

Air-mess isn't necessarily worse but he corrected me with his, not vice versa.

To most people, it's HURR-mees. Even if you know the French pronunciation, seems kinda douchey to use it...at least in these Red State-ish parts.

Ok fine but we were talking about the correct pronunciation period, not the most appropriate pronunciation in such and such places. I agree with you on the practicality of "air-mezz" and I suppose it works in French too but air-mess is still more accurate.


What a silly discussion though. This is what happens when sw&d get bored !
