I thought you have to hide drugs in your anus.

I thought that was part of the game.

You can't tell **** from the pictures or description in that auction because they're all in reverse. Margiela tags are white and the tab shouldn't normally have a visible snap in it like that, but they have been running a lot of different variations over the course of 10 years, so who knows....

There's a cherry red version out this season, want to kawp... it's about 4 big ones locally, MMM is mega pricey in my neck of the woods.

"Fashion Industry" is a huge umbrella with disparate groups under it.

2.3 and 2.5 markups (retail) are for boutiques and what are called "specialty stores", (like Nordstroms and Barneys). These are the stores typically discussed here, and by and large, they are lucky to be breaking even. Estimates have about 40% of boutiques in the US operating at a loss. Expenses are very high - payroll, rent, physical plant, etc... all make margins razor thin.

I appreciate the insight. So it's the mass-market retailers that end up doing a lot better? ( I guess that's a duh). Do companies like Gap and Old Navy have markups greater than 2.5 because of the bulk-production cost benefits? Or do they pass on the savings to their consumers (Old Navy is pretty cheap) But then they have huge marketing campaigns they have to fund...hmm.

I'm no expert, but I know that Gap and Old Navy have clothing costs that are amazingly low, and they do a ton of volume.

I suspect that boutiques do not do a ton of volume.

The fashion/boutique business model is beyond weird.

i feel like the boutiques are pretty realistic as in most cases they don't ahve monstrous coporations and many ceos and cfo's and such, it's just a couple dudes or chicks into fashion trying to spread their love for a certain aesthetic. i'm pretty sure it's alot more manageable.

they are completely different; huge entities running direct sales like the Gap and Uniqlo get to enjoy stuff for pennies on the dollar because they buy so many. I don't know if that is to say that some of their insanely discounted sale stuff sells for more than cost all the time, but they make plenty off the suckers who walk in and buy at full retail, because yeah, that stuff is marked up like 4000%. Not to say that the stuff that goes into Gap or Uniqlo is cheap though, I pick through zippers all day that have 'Gap' and 'Banana Republic' custom cast zipper pulls on YKK's, just a commissioned version of the standard YKK zipper that I use, and MMM use, among many, many others, high and low. Uniqlo also uses a ton of YKK zippers of the same quality.

boutique brands like MMM, I think; their manufacturing costs vs the retail price you see on the tag, not including middlemen and transport, is something like 1000%-2000%. MMM sneakers hover at like what, $350-400 nowadays? I think they probably cost about 25 Euro to make (Manifattura Ferrarese?)... The tees? The leather jackets at $2500? Those aren't costing 10% of that to make, more like 5%.

Rick Owens has one of the best hustles going in high fashion, his stuff is all patterning, custom fabric that he ony runs like 4 colors of, plus post-processing for things like leather. $400 tees, $1200 sneakers, and $2500 leather jackets.
