what are we even talking about, his fashion choices are obviously more calculated than those whose professions do not rely on public image. He has to identify with a certain fanbase. Beyond that, before he's ever mentioned rick and raf, he was just another rapper who smoked a lot and had good beats (clams casino), then suddenly became an avante garde fashionisto who apparently bids on ebay.

I think it's... admirable he's identifying with our internet fashion culture, and that he's trying to be a better kanye or something but I try to see culture as it is.

I dunno, I have a lot of respect for Rocky fashion-wise. Like, that video was pretty difficult to watch, but he consistently seems to know what he's doing when it comes to putting together outfits. His sense of style might be different from mine, but he seems to have an idea behind his fits and executes it well. Can't ask for much more IMO.

Kanye is a bit of a different case, if only because I think he REALLY knows what he's doing and has made a pretty significant impact on the way people dress. I think it's fine to not like their respective styles, but gotta respect.

do you guys look at this picture and think, shit... paris hilton knows her indie

hmm....it is unclear what famously airheaded and vapid Paris H has to do with Asap other than they are public figures...

Asap's interest seems genuine. He has stuck with it. At least he seems to realize that he is a stylist whose client is himself, and doesn't mistakenly believe that qualifies him to be a designer...like that other guy....

I don't believe Paris Hilton actually "knows" anything to be frank. Does anyone really think she listens to NMH… is this just another Captain Beefheart?

Dude has been repping RO And Raf way before he knew Clams.

I respect ASAP more than Kanye, basically for the reasons DLester already mentioned

I think you have that backwards. Rocky doesn't choose his clothes to identify with fans. His fans choose clothes to identify with him.

when is this before he mentioned Rick and Raf? Peso was like the first song he ever released.

this mr porter interview should give some insight, and also confirms what dlester said.

"At the age of eight I started getting into fashion, brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, Nautica and Ralph Lauren," he remembers. "But in 2005 I started wearing John Richmond jeans. I was into Prada and Dolce & Gabbana at the time and that's why I started to wear tight jeans, because I wanted to be a model. I started to do freelance work for Calvin Klein so I was slim and it just stuck."

A$AP arrives at the MR PORTER shoot wearing clothes by Jil Sander, Balenciaga and Junya Watanabe, but, again breaking the rap mould, says he has no plans to set up his own fashion brand. "I don't want to. It would be disrespectful to take my stardom and bully my way into the fashion industry, because I didn't go to [fashion] school to learn about design, sketching and fabrics. I just enjoy it; I'm a consumer." Given the macho nature of the hip-hop world I obliquely ask if A$AP's interest in fashion, and the cut of his jeans, have ever led people to call his masculinity into question. He responds bluntly: "People say I'm gay sometimes, but I have a lot of bitches so why would I care? It doesn't bother me at all. You know why they say that? Because they can't say that I suck, they can't say that I'm not handsome, and they can't say that my lyrics are wack, so they say that I'm gay because they don't have anything on me."

I know where you're getting at Accordion, but ASAP Rocky really does seem like one of the few public figures that genuinely likes fashion.

It surely goes both ways. I'm just skeptical of anyone who came up in the blogosphere and identify with specific brands. I'm more comfortable with say.. pj harvey & AnnD.
