I am primarily interested in the garments themselves.  Ot me, they are the objects of interest.  That's always been my focus, and I am sure that streetstyle blogging has deadened 99% of my remaining interest in how people put things together, especially considering that everyone photographed fits neatly into some archetype of "attractive".  That the photographs are taken in a uniform way really doesn't hel things at all.

i know people were talking about this elsewhere, think in one of the pitti threads, so figured i'd post. it's about the euro being so low but european goods not really being any cheaper in the US: http://abcnews.go.com/Business/wireStory/american-shoppers-benefit-euros-drop-28411966

Not since September 2003 has the euro traded this low against the dollar. Still, German sports cars, Belgian beers and the latest fashions out of Italy aren't going on sale anytime soon. The reason? There's simply too much demand in the U.S. for any markdowns.

...

Since Americans are willing — and able — to spend heavily on imported goods, there's no need for companies to cut prices. Any savings thanks to the euro's decline will instead be pocketed by manufacturers and distributors.

^it's a lot more complicated than that I'm afraid

the fits are for the most part ugly bc the garments are ugly

How many times do we need to see the same 10 guys and what they're wearing throughout 3 weeks of fashion weeks and shows? My biggest issue with these slideshows is that after a little bit, it's all high fives and shooting the same buddies over and over again. Nothing wrong with being buddies... but there's a point where the "photographer eye" is supplanted by the need to shoot the same guys because, well they expect that from him, and I'm sure he feels that he owes them to. There's thousands of dudes going through Pitti - we need those photographers who made it to keep a fresh eye.

I liked these:

Tommy Ton admittedly mostly shoots peacocky fashion insiders, but I don't know ... I think this stuff is more enjoyable when you don't take it necessarily as direction on how you should dress, but rather as inspiration on what's going on in the fashion world and how some people are having fun with clothes. A lot of what Bill Cunningham shoots is very peacocky -- even in a Pitti Uomo way -- but his reports are also really fun to watch. If you take Cunningham's reports as "here are people who are the epitome of style" then yea -- it kind of deflates the whole thing. But I don't think this stuff is meant to be viewed as that.

i like that pic of the old asian dude wearing black supergas and a down vest under a simple blue jacket. so much hinges on attitude. he's just walking down the street minding his own business. can't stand try hard outfits, calculated nonchalance, or that little smirk so many of these dudes have.

^ he's layering a blazer over a coat.

peacocking
Peacocking means dressing for attention. Just like Peacock's use their feathers to get a mate.

Peacocking is meant to make opening a girl easier, but if you're not congruent with your look (like, if you look like you're gay and you try to hit on a girl), wires are gonna get crossed somewhere and you're gonna blow yourself out.

But isn't that the default, especially at fashion week? I'm sure no one's dressing just to be comfortable.

I do. You can ask any of our crew. I don't actually dress for anything or anyone.

But you're not out to get photographed.

so they buy ugly shit for the sole purpose of being photographed which accomplishes what exactly? can they monetize this somehow even with there being so many of these clowns?

i'm not so sure but the joke's on them because they go home these regrettable purchases
