It's like "this poster likes show x or anime x and wears x as well, that's fucking cool"

Yeah, ditto.  I sorta have limit of 25 contiguous off/other-topic posts, though.  After that, they get their own thread, since there is obviously enough interest in the topic for a new thread.  The only thing that was different in this case is that I actually took it to the appropriate sub-forum, which is what we've been doing for 10 years now, anyway (it's how SWD got formed in the first place.)

I would argue that in this analogy, SWD is the record store and Random Fashion Thoughts is a pile of records with treasures buried within.

Styleforum is the mall which contains it.

would love to know what percentage of the userbase is doing that with any regularity, and in which ways they are using that system

about 50-70% of all "powerusers" do it, to some degree or another, and something like 20% of the active userbase do it.  People like the email updates most.  An average session from an email referral is about 4-5 times the average session time.

I only read thread I've already posted in or a poster "I like" links to.

There's a limit, though.

wait are you talking about me or hirsh

Obviously I'm talking about Moo.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Actually no, I was talking about Hirsh, but that's really funny that you thought it could have been directed at you.

And "Dumb Threads" wants to screw you in the back of a Volkswagen

Hirsh wasn't a bad poster, I enjoyed the oddity, but the sheer volume of her posts locked down a couple threads. It's a lot of noise seeing 6-7 threads in a row on the front page with contiguous posts by her. I imagine it's the same when you click random fashion thoughts and see 30 posts about anime when you could care less about it

Yeah, I can see that.  But it also isn't 2000 anymore, and those stores are pretty much all out of existence.  So, we try to do that still (I've argued for years, and continue to argue, that off-topic conversation is great for a community) and at the same time, try to make the barrier to entry less daunting, and to highlight the most fun/informative parts of the forums, so that newer members can see where they might like to go, and so that more senior members might see some interesting stuff that they never saw in the first place, because of the inefficiences inherent in the system.

That's why @Synthese got @rach2jlc to bring Prof. Fabulous out of seclusion for a regular column on our newsletter (a work in progress - bear with us), for example, and why we are spending time and money putting together a roster writers, every single one of them members of the forum, for our editorial team.

Incidentally, one large part of our userbase that should not be discounted are the lurkers.  There are members who have been reading religiously for years, day-after-day, and they have maybe two posts.  When I ask, they always say that if they had more to contribute, they would.

Dumb threads is great, but you can't take it seriously, think of it as drunk people in a bar.

The owner wants more specialised threads in more sub forums so that more google clicks will lead to more advertising revenue.

The record store analogy and any concerns about user functionality are specious at best.

Every time you post in a thread, you create a "subscription" to that thread so that it shows up on your personalised front page when you log in to SF.

Of course, you can also subscribe to threads in which you have not already posted, if the thread topic is of interest to you.

You probably know this already, but if you click on the "Styleforum" banner up at the top of the page, it takes you to the "recent Styleforum activity" page, with links to threads on your subscribed list. It's the page I always go to first when I visit SF and, if there's not much activity there, I'll then visit the CM or SW&D fora to see what's happening.

Why are people suddenly talking about Hirsh in the past tense?

She was busily posting in a whole heap of threads just a couple of days ago. I just flick past her posts rather than reading them as usually they're just about jeans or MTO/bespoke shirts that she likes, which isn't of interest to me personally. I don't begrudge her presence here, though.

I think she was banned for promoting her sales outside of B&S

Hirsh was terrible. I never made fun of her because, well, even if there is a chance she's really sick and potentially dying, etc. then I'm not going to go there. But every post was either something she ordered, the same fucking photo of her in her jeans and over-sized bespoke shirts, or about her health. Or all three. And that' all. Over and over again. I mean... at least miran is somewhat entertaining as a troll who gets banned all the time, but Hirsh... jesus. Literally adding nothing to the forum. And the constant pity party. Come on.

I think moo should join the pull-up thread
post #102915 of 109053
Do people there post videos of themselves doing the pullups? Or is it like they just post without proof... YEAH 100 TODAY WOOO.... uhoh.gif
