Random fashion thoughts - Page 6860

I ran a message board once.

One thing I learned is that you cannot tell users to do anything and expect them to do it. It's like a road. If you want people to drive fast, make your road wide and straight. If you want them to drive slow, make it narrow and twisty.

But if you build a wide straight road and post a 25mph speed limit on it, people are going to tend to ignore it.

Or, to use a different analogy:

I've run countless online communities and yes, that's pretty much true. What you do is try to channel the users' desires in ways that are beneficial for both parties. SWD has threads about a lot of things that aren't strictly "SWD" in nature, because SWD is a community itself.

Whether or not there are SWDers helping people get to 100k pullups or posting about fantasy football or discussing whether or not they would "hit it" is pretty irrelevant to me; I wasn't trying to start a huge discussion about anime, just to share a thought I had with a community I'm actively a part of. It was not content created for the sake of breaking down barriers or whatever.

Leaving SWD and seeing the other kinds of threads that are posted across SF's various channels grosses me out, more than anything else. I can't believe I'm a part of a community that abides this hellhole.

I for one am happy that the random anime thoughts have been moved to the random anime thoughts section of SF.

There are even subcultures within SWD. I would say the following are its own little bastions of style for better or worse:

1. Alden thread. Uncles and Nephews frolic and bathe in each other's shell cordovan induced foot sweat. But only in the greatest of health.

2. Yohji thread. Homeless 20-somethings experiment with gigantic clothing meant to be seen and observed as a mirror reflecting the beauty and space of self. Only wear the clothes for photos.

3. Mod to Suedehead thread. US men pretending to be British and British men pretending to be brutish.

4. Epaulet thread. Wispy homosexuals purchase clothing that appears to be from J Crew.

5. TOJ thread. Masochists paint walls and plant grass, only to watch is dry and grow, respectively, hundreds of times over before their order is finally shipped.

6. Stephan Schneider thread. College bros compare notes on how a sweater should fit over their pear shaped bodies.

Another thing I learned from running a forum is sometimes it's good to have a lightning rod for everyone's angst; someone whom we can all agree is the "worst person here" that prevents us from all turning on each other out of boredom.

There's a limit, though.

I have to say that I do a but of both selective reading and rummaging when it comes the the forum. I go through my subs first and when there's no new content i rummage through the various tentacles of the forum. To me, threads like this that have random banter, even anime, helps me relate or distance myself to other members outside of swd. It's like "this poster likes show x or anime x and wears x as well, that's fucking cool"

Or.. you could just subscribe to one more thread, even if it's not in SWD?  There are probably a lot of other people who do not frequent SWD and would love to read what you have to say.

Hirsh was a special case, and really, indicative of why Styleforum is successful.  I was not a personal fan, but I also don't try to make this community a mirror of my interests and/or personality, and to the extent that we can and will be, tolerant of many personalities and many political stripes.  Also, I am not going to kick someone off, particularly not someone who is really ill, just because some people can't just scan past her pretty innocuous, if slightly odd, posts.

lol @ subscribing to threads

would love to know what percentage of the userbase is doing that with any regularity, and in which ways they are using that system
