reedo, best cheap option that's not black timbs is classic black blundstone chelseas. this is what most people in nyc wear. only issue is that they're not insulated so when it gets really cold you need to wear thermals/double socks or heat tech otherwise your feet feel wet even though they're super waterproof. they're great though.

then the thing you bought ends up being completely awesome (icon_gu_b_slayer[1].gif) but doesn't fit (frown.gif)...so you decide to flip it and get the thing you wanted originally. i guess it all works out?

Do you want to buy my leather Monitaly zip jacket :) I've decided it's too short for me

hmmm...how do I contact a store in Japan with no listed email address to see if they still have an item posted on their blog? they have a phone number. guess I could try calling, but how prevalent is English in Tokyo?

I used to go the docs and smartwool route, same idea. less waterproof maybe but never had any issues.

I have a pair of Grenson Hadley boots w/ a commando sole and they've worked great for winter. You don't really need super weatherproof boots if you live in the city. I used to have a pair of bean-ish boots and almost never used them.

Yeah I do docs + socks
i roll with ll bean katahdin+wool socks. works fine.
Good tips guys. I'll probably grab a pair of waterproof (?) docs 1460s or Timbs then stock up on hefty wool socks.

for you computer nerds i have a question

i'm trying to order something off of an international site, have not had issues before and haven't changed any settings but when the site redirects me to their payment gateway, safari can't connect for some reason

i've contacted them and they said everything is fine on their end and others have not had any issue, i've cleared my cache and rebooted a couple of times but still the site fails to load

any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks fellas

Seems like one of the biggest concerns for winter boots would be salt build-up and its tendency to eat leather alive, so you'd want something that a) won't get chewed up, b) cleans off easily, and/or c) you don't care about/can replace cheaply and easily.

Unrelated: I just found out I'm going to a costume party (nothing exciting, just some fundraiser thing), and I need to pick out a zero-effort costume. I already have everything I need for:

1. Dexter
- pros: vaguely menacing
- cons: was already played out six years ago, involves wearing gloves indoors

2. Jim Stark (James Dean's character in Rebel without a Cause)
- pros: I have brown hair
- cons: strikes me as vaguely douchey for some reason, would probably wear LVC 1947s since I don't own Lee 101Zs

3. Philip J. Fry (same costume as above, but with sneakers instead of boots)
- pros: arguably funnier and incrementally more self-depricating than either of the above
- cons: I don't have orange hair
