Deadliest Catch

Does anyone else watch this show? It's on Discovery Channel and has a bunch of chain-smoking guys on fishing boats in the Bearing Sea during the winter. Those guys on the boat are CRAZY and deserve every penny they get. I just watch this show and wonder why king crabs are not more expensive than what they are!

i love this show

I found it by chance and liked it. Gets repetetive, though. I agree, they seem underpaid given the enormous danger.

I'm not impressed. My daily struggles are much more interesting.

King crabs (red) are quite expensive.

I wish they'd also show blue and gold seasons. It's a fun show, I really enjoy it.

One thing I don't get is why they don't get their boats checked out earlier and why they don't just come in a few days in advance to do stuff. Keith of the Wizard came up with an idea to fix a tarp to the front of the boat to prevent ice buildup, a great idea. I have no clue why he waited till he was out at sea, during 30ft waves no less, to put it on. I also wonder at what point Phil is going to replace the Cornelia Marie. It's always fucking broken.

Fishing boats are always broken in some way or another.

Seattle just had some big "CatchCon" thing recently. Kinda like a comic-con, just not as sad.

Apparently now there's a very similar show based on Whaling boats?

Not exactly. It's about a group of enviro-terrorists who harrass and disrupt a Japanese whaling boat. Some of the hippie chicks on the enviro-terror boat are really cute.

Awesome show. It's a rough live, and those guys live hard. I knew someone who did this for a few years. The work was very dangerous and very physical, but the pay was also very good. He would make a year's worth of salary in about 10-12 weeks, then spend the rest of the time blowing it in Vegas. The crab that he brought for us whenever he came down to visit was unbelievable. It came in a frozen box, much like what you could get at a typical market, but the taste was 10 times better.

I worked with a guy who had worked on these boats. He said the drug use was just out of control.

But this is a quality of the show that makes me confident that nothing is contrived - as if you can contrive anything television-wise on a boat on the Bearing Sea with a bunch of guys who would probably throw the camera man overboard if he posed a risk to their safety or catch.

I assume it would be cocaine, since they would need lots of "picker-uppers" while doing what they do. Maybe opiates, since they get banged around so much and end up getting on these medications for various injuries. Or maybe meth, to go off of what SField said - have you looked at those guys?

probably meth
