In 2003... that would explain how Papi became so good all of a sudden (and why he sucks now).

PS.... I just noticed Kunk added this to another thread... so delete this thread if it is already elsewhere

Actually... if you look at Ortiz's stats... you notice a HUGE JUMP in productivity between 2002 and 2003.

I don't think it's terribly surprising. If anyone asked you two years ago if you thought Papi was on roids, it probably wouldn't be inconceivable to you. High strikeout guy, doesn't make good contact, but suddenly explodes -- fits the mold.

FWIW, I WAS surprised when I found out Manny was on roids (the first time, not today obviously). Pujols would still surprise me.

Ortiz time line - Cut from the Twins for being a nobody - - picked up by Boston to be a bench player, exploded into a Latin version of Mo Vaughn.

And in other news, climate forcaster predict at least some snowfall in the Rocky Mountains this winter.

Who would have thought that this sport even on steroids would still be so slow and boring?

Are you kidding, You got tired of those 15-12 roids battles. I wonder how many pitchers lost their nerve to pitch after getting shelled by these guys.

On my first trip to Boston many years ago, we were treated to a game at Fenway by the folks we were there doing business with. The Sox were playing the A's. It was the year that McGuire was traded to St. Louis, but we were there before the trade deadline. I wasn't particularly a fan of either team, so I didn't care who won. All I wanted to see was lots of balls go over the Green Monster.

As it turned there were 4 or 5 dingers in the game. McGuire didn't hit one that night, but Canseco hit one that cleared not only the wall, but cleared the netting above the wall and went out into the street.

I enjoyed myself immensely. I found that if you regard it solely as a freak show and don't take it seriously as a sport, the roids actually add to your enjoyment.

I wonder if Big Mac was always on the juice. He did hit 49 his rookie year.. not sure if that supports that he was a natural athlete that only turned to the juice later in his career to keep up or if it means he was shooting up in high school.

As per the OP how can any one be shocked about anything these days? i honestly would be more shocked if a pro athlete was NOT on roids or other PE.
