Macbook Pro

I'm considering buying a Macbook Pro to run Final Cut Pro. Thinking about the 15-inch 2.66ghz since it's the cheapest one with a dedicated graphics card. Will this run FCP okay or not?

Also...am I best off buying directly from Apple, or do other places sell them for cheaper? And what about ebay?

buy from apple, get a student discount and an ipod touch that you can flip for an extra $150 or so

I would probably keep the ipod touch. I just didn't know if there were better deals to be had buying used.

Unless you absolutely need portability, I'd get a Mac Pro for FCP. I use FCE on a late 2008 MBP (2.4 GHz, 4 GB RAM), and it can get rough even for short sequences. The new MBPs can support up to 8GB, so that's good, but their hard drive options and CPU power will limit you. It's also much easier to do multi-monitor with the Mac Pro.

If you get a refurbed previous-gen Mac Pro or on closeout, they needn't be that expensive.

See this page for way more details on setting up a Mac for good performance:

Aside from sales tax, all the big retailers are about the same. I'd look at AppleInsider's price guide to see where you can get the best deal:

When I got mine, I used MacConnection. As usual, the rebate check takes forever to get to you.

If you're in a city with an active Craig's List you should give it a try. I was looking for one a few years ago and found some really good deals, many of them with a lot of extra software thrown in.

Yea this will be a really good setup. My roomate is a TVR major and the entire Park School is required to get a Macbook Pro to run all that editing software. He says it runs really well on his and he has the older MBP.

Dont go for dedicated graphics with the expectation that that will help with video editing. That will be almost entirely CPU bound. Dedicated graphics are an issue for gaming and not much else.

My cousin uses FCP on his Pro and it seems to work fine. He doesn't have any problems. It depends on what kind of footage you are editing. He is doing stuff from Panasonix DVX-100B and Canon XL-2.
