NYC eateries- recommendations?

I'm heading up to NYC this weekend- Friday night through Sunday afternoon. I was wondering what are some good restaurants/delis/eateries to visit? I have a feeling I'll be going to babbo for dinner Fri night as it is my friend's favorite place. I'm not looking for anything fancy or mind-blowing; just some simple, good food (delis, pizzerias, hole in the wall diners) . I'll probably be in Manhattan the whole time and will probably head to Chinatown. Thanks.

Just a few- Pearl Oyster Bar - West Village JG Mellons - Burger joing on UES Sigiriya - Sri Lankan on 1st Ave in the East Village - BYOB Otto - another Batali joint but very good - Greenwich Village Mizu Sushi - Flatiron - this place is loud but always very good for low key, tasty sushi Hill Country - Flatiron - Awesome bbq. The moist brisket is worth the trip alone Prune - East Village - Small restaurant, small menu, great food. Bikini Bar - South of Penn Station - Eastern European girls in Bikini's. Do not eat the food. Sketchy and great on many levels.

since you mentioned Chinatown, Doyer's Vietnamese is among the best there.

I work right by Doyer's if you want to meet up for lunch one day. As for good deals in NYC, restaurant.com has a discount code "NAPKIN" that give 80% off. Some really good deals if you search the whole site.

nice, I'm not too far away from Doyer's at my current office, though I'll be moving shortly after I get back from vacation, I'm awaiting details.

Anyways I recommend Doyers for the excellent food, huge menu, and hiariously low prices. Plus, it is well off the beaten track in Chinatown so tourists rarely go there, and us New Yorkers tend to like that.

Also, I like Jackson Hole. Massive burgers and a few locations throughout the city.

for breakfast/brunch, Alice's Tea Cup is hard to beat. I think there's 2-3 locations, you'll probably be closest to the one at 64th and Lex. The scones benedict makes me elated.

+1 on Pearl. If you haven't had a Pearl lobster roll, you haven't lived.

+1 on JG melons but they only take cash.

Nyonya Malaysian on Grand and Mott...amazing.

Try a graze through the Chelsea Market on 9th and 15th.

Oh, and Yonah Schimmel Knishes... it's part of the nyc experience. ...and Cafe Habana in Nolita (the little grab a table if you can or eat outside section, not the actual cafe next door).

I second the Jackson Hole recommendation. I like the one on 64th Street between 2nd and 3rd avenues. They have a nice patio area in the back. I just hope it doesn't rain this weekend.

I remember walking to Yonah Schimmels with my parents 50 years ago when I was a little boy. We lived on Clinton St. and it was quite a treat.

We used to walk to Katz's Deli on Houston too. Do you NYC people still consider Katz's a place to go? Or is it nothing special these days. We used to walk to Ratners on Delancey St. too.

To the OP. Enjoy your quest of cuisine. Of course NYC has a vibrant and famed haute cuisine scene, but some of the hole in the wall, and little known places are fun, very good, and certainly less expensive.
