Greetings,

I'm looking to move to the South Florida area in the next two months and need to find a full-time job. I have a gap year before professional school the following fall, so I just need something to make money in the meantime.

I'm very open as far as positions and would really do anything...so long as I can at least make 25-30K with health benefits. Anyone from the area or know of any one specifically that is hiring? Or where my best chances would be?

I've been trying Craigslist and Indeed.com so far. I worked a couple years in the IT industry after graduating college, but I'd rather not work an IT job. Any responses would be appreciated

S. Fl sucks... also was hit hardest in nation by recession, housing market wise.

Yeah, I've noticed jobs are pretty hard to come by down there, but hopefully something will come through. I'll have a roommate, so housing won't be an issue. Thanks for the link Agnacious....have you had any experience with that site?

You are sort of fucked. Unemployment in West Palm is 11% and I believe Dade and Broward are in that range also. Your best bet would be to find a new store and get in before everyone else does. Save that, try and employ any special skills you have.

God I lived in Fort Lauderdale for four years. What a gilded place to live to say the least. You'll get sick of the weather, the architecture sucks, if you're white have fun being the minority BY FAR, people are rude, very impersonal, no community vibes at all. Unemployment actually forced me to move, how ironic. My friend is going to Fort Lauderdale for Medical School, I have forewarned him. Not to shit on your parade, but best of luck to you, the economy sucks and the job market is rough but cross your fingers and work hard and it will always pay off.

Lol, sounds like I'm stepping into trouble. But this is not a career move...I will most likely be there for 1 yr tops. Like I said, I have a gap year before professional school in fall of 2010, so I'm just trying to make some money. 30K and benefits would be wonderful....it's not much, but it would suit me fine for the year. Rambo, I would be between Fort Lauderdale and Miami. So I'd like to find a job in that corridor if possible.

Not to be nasty, but why would you do this to yourself? It sounds like this is a choice. If you're not being forced to move there, why go to a place that sucks so bad? Between the high unemployment and complete collapse of the housing market, South Florida is in really rough shape, even relative to the rest of the country. Plus, most of Florida sucks, so it's not like you're making some sacrifices to live somewhere cool.

I wish you the best of luck, but there has to be a better place to spend your year off from school.

Do you stay in Boca AndrewRyanWallace? Damn, is there anything good about the area? I've been to Ft. Laud/Miami a few times and didn't think it was so bad. Sure, it's probably not a place I would settle down at, but for a year it could be fun. Cost-wise it would be the lowest of the other cities I was considering. No state income tax helps too.

You are asking a silly question. "Recommend a job in So. FLA that pays $30K?"

You should get a job based on your skills, talent, knowledge and desire. Without knowing those things it's pointless to try to guess what might be a good match for you.

$30K is roughly $15/hour. You could get a job easy managing a yard maintenance company for that amount, I suspect. Speaking Spanish would be a major plus.

In the best of times So. Fla. is a low-wage, service-based economy, $30K w benefits would probably be considered fine compensation. In the current disaster good luck.

I grew up in Boca, that's where my family is and where I live during the summer. I went to highschool and most of my friends (includin my current girlfriend) live in Ft. Lauderdale. As I said in the other thread, it is pretty and there are nice things about it but there is a serious dearth of culture, class and youth. Miami has the most young people but I absolutely detest the culture of Miami. Some people don't mind it or enjoy that, so to each is own. I find myself pretty bored when I am here though, though the beach and some of the parks can be a lot of fun once you get used to the heat.
