I like the Saarinen in a lightly veined marble, but only with the vintage bases that are matte and sometimes have a slightly yellow tinge. The new ones with the shiny super white bases are better with other tops.
Personally, the Saarinen I think is worth either saving for or "not eating for a couple days" for. As a round table, if that's what you need, it's fantastic. In his range, I think he could do far worse than: The latter, unfortunately, still comes in at 2k. The Cherner is a great bet too. I'm not terribly fond of the Risom.

I think I am going to try and track down the Olsen set. At some of the high end furniture stores I have seen them for $5K - $7K, but they seem to go for $~1,500 on ebay.
i think marble looks great (and have it on a side) but its not as hard wearing or durable as the laminate. fine edges chip easily and the top scratches- not a relaxing table to have guests (especially children) at.
