turns out it was for phones. However, its cat5e cable, and all the pairs are there, so I am just going to change the keystones to rj45 and terminate the other ends into (1st question) Jacks or ends? and problem mostly solved. One last questions (#2). Which is better - 6 devices on one hub/router/switch or two routers with 3 each, or does it really not matter at all?

1) I'd just do ends. Doesn't really matter though.
2) Better to have all devices plugged in to a single switch if it's not too much of a pain in the ass for the wiring. If it is, I wouldn't worry about it. Performance will only be slowed if you're maxing out a couple ports at once (if two devices have to share a single link to the other switch).

Agree, it depends a bit on what you are doing.

If you plan to routinely transfer large files on your home network then you might want to consider the single switch solution from GQgeek.

If you have play on-line games, like xbox live, you might want to be sure that you can set up port forwarding. This will probably limit you to hanging your gaming box off the first router -- although it depends on how sophisticated your set up is.

If you are just surfing the net then don't worry about it. Your bandwith to the outside world will limit you before your home network.

Thanks GQ. My plan is going to bring everything to a single switch. It shouldnt be too bad, I got lucky and there is a heat register right were the main router is going so I am going to bring: From Router 1. Vonage directly to the box 2. Router to the hub/switch 3. Router to main TV/DVR. then from hub 1. upstairs office 2. Bedroom TV (this is the run I am 'changing') 3. Work Laptop (VPN is the big issue here) 4. Desktop 5. AIO Printer So not too bad on the hub.
